I have a Nikon d100 with a nikon 24-120 1:3.5-5.6G lens. I really like the canon offerings but wondering if I should just upgrade the nikon body (which one...7100 or other?) and add to the Nikon lens collection. Just an amateur family picture taker wanting better quality photos! Help?!

well, I have no experience with Nikon having used Canon all along, but we all know the real expense in this hobby or whatever we call it, is the glass (lenses). There are probably some good deals out there now, but I have found that there are always good deals to be found with a bit of searching.

the 7100 might be overkill. I would suggest d5200 or d5300.
Both would improve the performance of the 24-120 lens and because of their good iso performance also improve your low light capabilities.
Both have all the automation you need for easy shooting but also have the menu and controls for custom shooting.

You don't say what it is about your present set up that doesn't satisfy you. Lacking that knowledge makes it difficult to give an accurate reply.

You might also post some of your pictures that you are not happy with for analysis.

That will get you plenty of help.

Dapop, welcome to the Hog!
Personally when I had a choice I went with Canon after exploring both the cameras and mainly the lenses.
The 7100 is a good camera, but it's getting a little tired. Many are saying that it's going to be replaced as soon as a few months. It's a good action camera if you are considering action or nature but paying top dollar for a camera at the end of its service life is never a great idea unless you can get it close to half off. But for a lot less money you could get a used Canon 7d that is very similar to the 7100 or even arguably better. And for about the same money you can get the Canon 70d which is a VERY new design and packs a LOT more innovation and tech. Action wise the 70D is about the same but the 7100, has the articulating screen, built-in wifi and the real biggie, Auto Focus video!
Go for the newest and most tech you can get. It's the time to switch if your gonna do it. Good luck. ;-)

Your D100 is an antique, I think it's time for an upgrade the 24-120 is a very good lens I have it & a D7100, a great camera , IMHO , I have a lot of pictures on this site. People rant and rave about this camera & that one the proof is in the end results, have a look, you can check my flickr site as well many shots with the D7100.

Don't know much about Nikon, being a Canon guy, but it seems like you already have a good lens and as far as expense it would seem to make more sense to stick with a Nikon body. Unless there are particular Canon features that you want it is unlikely you would notice any IQ differences between the 2 brands. Both make excellent cameras. For your use you may want to check into some of the alternatives. There are some very good mirrorless and bridge cameras available that may be a better choice.

Literally any Nikon body would be a MAJOR improvement over the old D100. The D7100 is a fine choice, it simply does not get any better in a crop sensor camera, especially at its $949 price point.
If price is a big consideration I would suggest looking at a D7000, they can still be had new for $699 and good used ones at around $550 all over.
Good luck.

Great suggestions here from everyone! Since I have a good Nikon lens, it makes since to go with a new Nikon body. Price is certainly a concern. Would you suggest the D7000 over the D5300?

The D5300 requires AFS lenses, the D7000 will accept any AF lens. Let your lenses be your guide.

Personally I'd get the D5300 due to the 24.3 megapixel sensor rating over the D7000 at 16.2. It's better for cropping pictures and overall resolution. By the numbers, it is 33% better. Plus the 5300 is new technology and the 7000 is a few years old. They are priced similar so if it were me I'd go with the D5300.
Check out Cameta and B&H for great deals. Tomorrow is Cyber Monday. Here's a link.....Good Deal!

does your 24-120 have a focus motor or does it require the camera to focus it?

The lens is AF-S. Does that mean it will work with the D5300?
