An interview with BeaverNewby,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I have been interested in photography since my high school days during the late sixties. My younger brother sold me a 35 mm Petri SLR body which had no lens he had found on clearance for about $35.00. I later purchased a 55mm lens and my adventures began.

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
No formal training, only perusing the photo magazines of the day and dreaming a lot. I learned from the magazines how simple it was to develop black and white film and print photos. I bought the equipment from the local photo stores and setup a small darkroom in the closet of my home and developed black and white film. Later on in college I got access to the college dark room and a quality Negative enlarger.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
The lighting is the key, I learned from the photo magazines of the day and later books, how one's vision also shaped the captured images. I didn't have access to the best equipment back then but always wanted to do nature photography and creative photos, still do.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
My current camera gear is a Nikon D3300, 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 VRII, and a 55-300mm f4.5-5.6 VRII. The Automation in the camera did 99 percent of the work. Sun light streaming through the open windows was balanced by the on camera flash.
Catching my grandson's expression was the hard part? I won't discount luck, but digital gear made it incredibly easy to catch just the right moment.

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
Only if I have some images that catch my eye and I think I can improve what I was trying to capture. I used Adobe Photoshop Express to auto balance and cropped the image slightly.

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
I am an old timer, I enjoy lots of art forms, so I don't have any that come to mind. My grandson and granddaughter have smiles that can melt your heart, trying to document that is all the inspiration I needed.

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
Take more photos, I have some undeveloped film that has not been developed, I wonder what's there?
8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
How rare it is to be in the right place to take a great photo but every moment one occurs so keep your eyes and mind open.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
A great local, but you can find great images every where.

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
I don't have it yet but a fast telephoto.

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
None, other than the on camera flash.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I am a scientist by nature and trade, continue to research, cherish and enjoy the life that God has given me.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
While video taping my brother's wedding I tripped over my own feet just as the procession exiting the church begin and recording it. No damage done to camera or myself other than my pride.

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Not yet, I only have a couple of images that I consider worthy of display.

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
I am inspired by the wealth of information shared on this website. Keep sharing!! Thanks for the opportunity to share!!
