I'm presently using a 30 day trial of Corel PaintShop X4 and I already have a major problem with it. Every time I choose to look at any image I have on my computer it results in the program being brought up and said image is made ready to be worked on.

I have tried to find a way to deactivate this feature to no avail. I probably would like to buy the program, but won't if this feature cannot be deactivated. :-(

Can anyone here tell me how to do away with this annoyance?

No such problem here...are you closing the file after it comes up? Seems like it's using PSP as the default opener. Change the default to the program you were using.

Are you double clicking the image trying to just get a preview? If so, instead try to right click on the image and choose " preview" if using W7. It will open it in a built in previewer. You may have to set up a default previewer in your preferences depending which operating system you are using.

Yes - go to the preferences or system setup in Paintshop and TURN OFF the 'association' with JPG images.

When you tell PS to "associate" itself with JPGs or any type of image file, whenever you double-click an image it will start up.

Use something simple like Irfanview or FastStone image viewer if you just want to VIEW images (or even Windows built in stuff), rather than a full-blown editing program like Corel or Photoshop.

This probably happened at install time, when you accidentally agreed to Corel's suggestion "Associate PaintShop with graphic images?". Many programs do this, thinking that you'll ALWAYS want to use JUST THEM to work with images. They think they're the only thing you'll ever want or need. Very obnoxious behavior, and they all do it. You just have to learn to Say NO!

Very simple, I think. Every file is opened by a certain program. PS4 made itself the default for graphics.

Change the program that opens a type of file

If you double-click a file in Windows and it opens in the wrong software program, follow these steps to choose the program you would prefer that file use. You can change this setting for an individual file, or you can tell Windows to open all files of that same type in the software program you choose. I got this from Windows Help --

Open the folder that contains the file you want to change.

Right-click the file that you want to change, and then, depending on the type of file, either click Open With or point to Open With and then click Choose Default Program.

Click the program that you want to use to open this file.

Do one of the following:

If you want all files of that type to open in the same software program, select the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box, and then click OK.

If you want only that file to open in the software program this one time, clear the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box, and then click OK.

I would not dissassoiate Corel with any format you will be using with the software. Instead as previously suggested in each case where you which view photos, right click on any photo, you will get options to open the photo including a default option which will give you the option to browse for a program.
This insures that PSP will be used to open the photo only when you want it.

jerryc41 is spot on with his reply. I would absolutely set a default program to open all images.

After you have done that:

When you open PSP 4X; on the left side is the Navigation panel. Here you can find any image you want. You can also open an entire folder if you wish.

Go to your computer settings. When you loaded the program it changed the settings so that it was the default for viewing images. You can change that. Some of the members more proficient than I should be albe to give you the instructions easily - I always struggle to find the menu

Everyone seems to be assuming that you are shooting in JPG, although you don't say so.

If you're shooting in RAW, your standard graphics viewer built into your OS will almost certainly NOT be able to open the shot.

Tell us what format you're shooting in.

open it with Windows, or pretend you are sending an email, and there is usually a fixer-upper program, that can do moderate adjustments on your photo.

The Corel and Photoshop people have that advertisment at the start of trying to manipulate a photo......Soooooo...Pretend to write somebody!

I hope that is what you wanted to hear!

I was stupid enough to buy X4 outright and obviously I have the same problem.......... I kept my X2 Ultimate on my computer as I knew having both wouldn't effect each other.

Other than the problem mentioned, I found out in short order that I couldn't put my copyright logo on my finished photo...I can type anything I want as long as it shows up on my key board but any symbol other than that, good luck.

This X4 allows RAW to be worked on but I prefer to use the Canon DPP prior to changing it to TIF or JPEG.

I called Coral on the symbol issue and got nowhere.
