When we have a sustained East windsd and/or close to a full moon the waters from the bay will be pushed up the rivers causing abnormal high tides. This causes the high waters to sometimes reach the bottom of our pier boards causing the insects under the pier to climb into the spaces (about the width of the diameter of a medium size nail left between the individual boards). The spotted sandpipers are aware of this and occasionally stop by to dine. The first image is not very clear, but I included it so that you can see the spots on their breast during the nesting season; the others are of non breading and/or juveniles carefully checking the cracks for tasty insects!
Great images. What camera and lens?
