I remember reading in a past post on Hedgehog that the newest firmware upgrade to the Canon 7D prevented the use of certain battery replacements other than the original Canon batteries. If I am correct, and I may not be, this might have been just grey market batteries and not all replacement batteries. I have been using some European Canon batteries that are Canon that were bought and advertised as Canon but grey market not US market Canon. They have been working fine for almost 2 years. I have also been using Wasabi batteries that I got from Amazon and they also work great. My question is, if I put in the new firmware upgrade will I loose the functionality of these batteries. Also, what were the other benefits of the latest 7D firmware upgrade. I am happy with the camera as it is and I currently have 2 of them.
The firmware upgrade does greatly improve some things.
Firmware Version 2.0.X adds A higher maximum burst rate for continuous shooting, definable maximum limit for ISO Auto, compatibility with the Canon GPS Receiver GP-E2, and manual audio level adjustment. Additional enhanced features include faster scrolling of magnified images, quick control during playback, in-camera RAW image processing, JPEG image resizing and ratings, plus customization of file names and time zone settings.
You can find some of the newer generic batteries that will work just fine with it. Some of the generic batteries will not totally communicate with the camera but will still work. The gray market Canon batteries should not be an issue.
I would recommend doing the firmware upgrade because of the additional features and increased performance.
I am still using the 6.00 or so cheap batteries for my Canon SX 60 and I was also using them in the 50 which I had up graded. No problem and sure a lot cheaper than Canon's batteries plus rather than the 920 I get up to 1800.
I installed Firmware 2.0.5 and it did not effect my third party batteries. I own 1-Canon, 2-Nikura, and 3-unknown manufacturer batteries. All work fine with my 7D camera. Gary

I had a couple of Wasabi batteries that worked fine in my 5D MK III until I did the firmware upgrade. They also worked fine in my 7D until I upgraded the firmware. I purchased some newer Wasabi batteries that were listed as working with the 5D MK III. These batteries work in the 6D, 5D MK III, 7D, and 7D MK II without any issues.
To address another comment about the SX50; I had a few generic batteries for the SX40 that required a generic charger. The later ones I bought have worked in the Canon chargers and in the SX40, SX50, and SX60 with no issues. I have been pleased that most of the accessories for the SX40 have fit the SX50 and SX60.
