On November 15th our 1st cow we purchased had a calf. We had bought one of our nephew's cows he was going to take to the sales barn after it had it's calf. The deal he made with us was we got the calf if we bought the cow. In no way am I going to milk cows in my retirement but to have them to raise and sell for a little extra income and to make use of our 7.5 acres of alfalfa grass mix rather than have other farmers cut and bale. We also have the 2 donkeys we need the hay for so this is just a little bonus. After all this explanation here is the calf and mother just hours after the birth and a week later. The calf is full of energy jumping like a rodeo bull. Not in these pics as I haven't had the camera with when she gets to jumping around.

Elvis and Rosie watching the calf when it came out of the barn, more excitement for them.

You seem to have a lot of acreage; that to me is not retired. Really like the little animals.
We only have 13.5 acres and 3 of it is house shop and barn area with a lot of mowing during the summer. but the tractor with the 60 inch mower only takes 3 hours with one hour of that is trimmer work along fence, house and pine trees. Thanks for looking. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours

The ranch only calved about 900, down from last year. I still enjoy watching them take their first steps. My wife is bottle feeding 3 leper calves. She has named them, pets them. [worse than grand kids]They are a lot of fun.
They are a hoot to watch when they are first born. The wifes family has a dairy farm and we just wanted to have animals on the hobby farm so we started small with the pregnant holstein. We will someday start selling off and putting some in the freezer for ourselves.

My landlord, his daughter had two for 4H projects that turned into pets he was not allowed to sell. The next two go named T-bone and Sirloin just so everybody knows what is going to happen to them.
The rancher we work with is a super friend. My wife tends the newborn calves that may not make it on their own. Two years ago we had to pull an extra large calf that would have died. He was so dumb he couldn't find the barn door if you stood him in it. We named him big boy, When we butchered him he gave a little over 800# of meat that we are still enjoying. Every time my wife gets stew meat from the freezer I have to laugh. Every one and every thing has a place on this earth.
Thanks for looking kabouey, animals are fun to watch as they all have different personalities.

Thanks Marilyn, the only thing I miss is we still don't have a lot of deer coming around yet like I did when we lived in the Twin Cities. It will take a while before we get them to stick around and the gun deer season just got done a week ago. I am seeing a few on the trail camera out by the feeder though. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving.

It will take time for them to feel at ease again. I know how you miss them tho.
Thanksgiving was good. I hope yours was as well.
