I am trying to scan 35mm negatives and not getting results.

What settings are you using on your Epson V500 flatbed scanner ??

I found using the Epson Scan software worked better than the other choices I had.

I took some notes from the last scanning session.

For 35mm B&W:
Professional Mode
16-bit Grayscale
4800 dpi
Target size seems to be set to 2.70 x 9.33 (but I don't know why)
Unsharp mask checked
Dust removal checked, level high
Scan to a TIFF

For 35mm Color:
Change to "Color Negative Film" and 48-bit color.

Have you removed the white backboard from the scanner lid?
Are you getting poor results or "no" results?
My V500 top light finally gave up the ghost after over 4 years of HEAVY service, made a good excuse for me to upgrade to the V600 last week.

Preview first with thumbnail setting. Set your preferences, numbers etc.
I use the professional mode, make your adjustments, scan at high res.
Try things till you get the swing of things. There are quite a few things to Do but once you master them it's a great machine.
Remember, the higher the res, the slower the scan but if it's a good shot, it's worth it. Persevere & you'll be pleased with it.
I found that they should all (4) be placed in cradle the same way. Crop out the frame of slide ending with flashing dotted line around each image only, then scan all. You have to experiment till you have it right.

Oh yeah, & I think there is a switch for the top light to be turned on, at the back end of lid. I'm not near it at the mo but MT jogged my memory.
