Nice picture of some ship's rigging, and I like the B&W treatment, but the two subject parts are "dead eyes", not pulleys. The only pulleys (sheaves) are at the far right side; the lower one has a single line through it and the upper two near the mast also appear to be single line sheaves for lifting or adjusting something on deck below the photo.

What is the purpose of the "dead eyes?" To keeping the rigging from twisting or something.

They upper dead eyes are primarily for ending the shrouds without tying a knot, but in case of major damage they could be undone to replace a damaged shroud. The lower dead eyes could be loosened to re-tighten shrouds that had stretched or needed adjustment for any reason. The length of the shroud lines between upper dead eye and the mast attachment point would have made them too heavy and difficult to work at sea unless absolutely necessary. Depending upon the size of the ship there would be minimum of three or five shrouds 50 or more feet long 1"+ diameter tarred & heavy lines and all the ratlines (the smaller horizontal lines) between the shrouds that would also have to be replaced.
