Anyone been using the Sony A7 over the last few months, if so please give me your considered opinion as I'm thinking of buying. Currently using Nikon D700 with 24-70 2.8, but it is heavy.

I have one I took in on trade for a D800. Its a nice little camera, but not my cup of tea. They do take very good images once you get used to the controls and the EVF.

This was on PictureCorrect today. Video is by a professional who switched from Nikon to Sony. It's a bit long, but this guy is pretty passionate about the Sony.

I have the Sony a7R and love it. It's amazing camera light and versatile. With the Sony 35mm lens and 1 battery its a feather weight. I also have the canon 70-200mm which add some weight. I also have the metabone adapter for my Canon L lens they work fine. There is a learning curve but its worth it. One back draw is battery life is limited but you can buy a double battery holder that help.

Thanks guys for your replies. The more I hear from you the better it makes my switch to Sony from Nikon.
Yes, I understand trading in to get the D800, but it's still very heavy and I do want to be able to carry a smaller cam around pretty much all the time without the weight.

You will save weight (67oz to 30oz): ~20oz on the camera body and 16oz going from the Nikon f/2.8 to Sony f/4 (Sony doesn't have an f/2.8 available).

Have you considered a micro 4/3 camera? Lens weight and cost scale with camera body focal plane size. A micro 4/3 system might be even lighter and less expensive.

A7ii was just listed today for pre order. Not cheap, but not too bad considering if the 5axis works as well as they say it will.

But the em10 and some small primes are still going to be way smaller than the a7

I have the Sony a7R and love it. The only drawback is that the lenses for full-frame cameras are expensive. But worth it, in my opinion.

If you use e mount Sony lens on the 7a I understand it will give you a crop images. You must use full frames lens if that's what you want.

Thanks to all the really helpful tips guys.

One other thing with the a7 or indeed the new a7 11, I want to buy a high qual lens, no-one has mentioned Zeiss lenses, anyone used them?

I purchased a Sony a7R back in May of this year. I could not be happier. Pictures are as good IF not better than the Canon 7D I just recently sold which in itself was not slouch for a camera. DO I see some down sides to my a7R? yes, but things I can live with. Short battery life is one, so I just carry extra batteries. I currently use only the FE 55mm F1.8 lens and plan on purchasing the 200mm F4 lens to go with it. Sony is working on more lens for the a7 series but I think with the 55 and 200 is all I need for what I shoot. The a7R is not a good action/ sports camera but my understanding the a7 is somewhat better. The a6000 is even better yet for action/sports, BUT it is a crop sensor camera which there is nothing wrong with that. I have toyed with buying one of those as well. I saw the other day that Sony is coming out with the a7II so if you are interested you might want to see what kind of updates will be on the new updated model, I don't think you can go wrong with buying a Sony, but make sure you buy that will cover your needs.

I haven't used any of the new a7 cameras but am keeping a watch out for further improvements since I will probably eventually buy one (or more). When I picked one up in a store to get a feel for it, the first thing I noticed (what felt like to me) was an uncomfortable position of the shutter button. I see that on the version II, they have moved it forward. That should be an improvement in my opinion. I hope Sony does the same with the A7r and A7s.

I bought the A7r and, like the others in this chain, I love it. I traded my Leica Monochrom and other Leica stuff for it. I have the 55 Zeiss and the 28-70 Zeiss. I do a lot of stitch pans and convert most of my images, pan or not, to B&W. None of the Leicas I've owned (from the 2 M6 cameras, the M7, M8, M9 and, finally, the Monochrom) worked well for pan stitching; never any problems with the Sony and Zeiss optics (unless I make an error, that is). I also own the Sony Rx100 M3 (fantastic small camera), and the Sony Rx1r. I've always used my cameras in manual mode, so the only thing I had to get used to on the Sony's is the manual focus, but, honestly, it was not any kind of a brain test! I am a most satisfied Sony fan.
