Have you gotten a new 5 gallon gasoline can lately? They have so many safety features that you need two people, or three hands, to operate them. I have two that I don't like because they're very awkward to use. I have to release two safety springs to get the gas to flow.

With winter coming on, I got another one today. There's a label on the side with directions, numbered 1 through 4, telling you how to get the gas out of the can. Imagine one person trying to do this in the cold weather, refilling a snow blower. I disabled two of the "safety" springs, but I still have to push down hard on the nozzle while I'm tilting the can to get the gas to flow.

All I want is a cap to seal the can and a spout for pouring. Safe and easy.

Jerry, you are speaking in a foreign language for these times. It is called common sense and it isn't much used anymore. Think of how many lives have been saved by the judicious use of 4 operating systems just to get the gasoline to flow from the can. How many could that be, maybe 1 in a 20 year period if that much. Think of the noxious fumes leaking into the atmosphere with a gas cap not secured tightly. Let me see, I am thinking maybe 4 drops worth of fumes. Yep, the government is sure protecting us these days.

This is not to mention you probably violated 2 Federal Felony statutes by disabling the two locking systems. For shame, Jerry, for shame.

No, I didn't really disable anything. :D

You mean I can't use the glass quart coke bottle any more when I run out of gas.

Maybe you can in MO, but not in NY - no glass, even if you have the cap for that Coke bottle. :D

Jerry,,,, I know that it is winter and maybe all "Garage Sales" are over, but you might be surprised at the number of "GAS TYPE" cans are sold at them, and even if the can isn't to your liking, the caps might...YOU know the cap that has a 6" 8" tube coming out of the center..... spend 50 cents and you have your problem solved...

Yeah, I bought a new gas can recently, and it seems I'm more like to spill a little gas than with the old kind. Grrrrr...

I never spilled a drop when using the big 1.5" opening and a funnel. Having to hold the 40 lb can while aiming it and operating one or more spring-loaded devices does not seem like a safe way to do things.

Another thing. Have you noticed that they make it difficult to remove the filler cap? It's got a "safety" interlock now. Stupid!

I recently bought a new 5 gallon can and I finally, after three stops, found one that would allow gas to flow out without using three hands. I was complaining about how screwed up it was and was told that they have to make that way so we don't get hurt and they also have the regular spout that you can buy as an accessory that replaces all the "safeties"

I've been looking for them. Maybe available on the Black market. :D

Google EZ pour replacement spout kit by Rural King..... Of course this is for existing old type cans :-) Comes with everything you need. Use 1/2" drill to install vent. Works great!!! Brings new life to old cans... Not legal to modify new ones:-)

Fantastic! I have old cans with broken or missing caps. Thanks for this.

If I recall correctly this is a result of the Consumer Product Safety Commission deciding that the old gas cans were too dangerous for people to use.

Right. Pouring liquid from a container is beyond the capabilities of so many people that we all have to pay higher prices and put up with "safety" features. It's always the lowest common denominator that sets the standards.

Pop up to Canada, find a Canadian Tire store (not hard to do), and buy a gas can here....still sold with a single single safety feature, basically a child proof cap.....that is to say it's been proofed by a child, just hard to open by an adult, but at least possible.
Might have trouble getting it past Homeland Security on your way home though so be careful

Just an added thought, have those safety thinkers taken into account the number of people who have frozen to death while trying to open one of those monstrosities?
