Hello all from Ohio,
I'm new old stock to digital photography. I enjoyed my 35 mm Cannon t70 in the 80's but technology has put it the closet. I'm looking to jump back in and get updated. I'm a auto restorer and I'm needing a camera to take lots of pics of the process also enjoy aviation photos. I've been researching the Nikon d3200 or Cannon Rebel. Any suggestion would be great. I'll also surf around the forum for info
Thanks JD

Seriously though - the folks here have lots of good advice and a couple of days of experience and are willing share what they can - don't hesitate to ask detailed questions, in fact, the more details, the more accurate the answer ;)

Thank you for the warm welcome. I'm so looking forward to getting back into the wonderful world of photos.
Welcome to the Hog, jd. You'll find lots of friends & plenty of good advice here. Don't overlook some of the Sony products while you're researching cameras. Where in Columbus is your shop? I'd love to visit & shoot some of your work if time permits. I live on the southeast side near Capital University.
Welcome to the UHH. There is a lot of experience, and good info to provide some great help here. Enjoy and have a GREAT DAY!

Hi JD: My first question to you would be about your t70 lenses... Are they usable on the Canon Rebel.. If they have the red dot on them they should be... The alternative would to be buying both the Nikon d3200 plus lenses.. Just food for thought..

Echo the question on lenses. What do you have? If you are starting new either Canon or Nikon will work for your purposes with an edge toward Nikon, unless you want to shoot some of the vehicles in fast action (like races) where the edge shifts to Canon.

The T70 lenses are FD mount and will not be usable on a Canon Rebel without an adapter - the T70 and lens will make a nice display on a shelf.
I have a T90 with a couple of lenses which makes a nice display.
I went over to a Canon 300D - the original Rebel but didn't invest in a lot of glass, mainly because the 300D was such a come down from the T90.
Last year I moved over to Sony with the A77 and have been investing in some serious glass ever since. (It was the wow factor of the A77 which resulted in investing in decent optics, the first time I had been so enthused about a camera since the T90)
In reply to jd1011 I would look further than the main two due to the fact that you have zero investment in usable glass - Sorry you asked "Which camera" and you ought to look at the alternatives to Canon / Nikon, - things have moved on since the '80's

JD, welcome to the Hog!
Hey, just do what all the pros do and get a Canon! That's what I did and now at least I look like a pro!
JD, I'm gonna suggest you go used and look at one of the many used Canon 7D's that are starting to flood the market. They will be about $600 for the body but though a little old are still extremely capable semi-pro cameras.
And since you like to surf, the 7d is one of the best cameras for shooting surfing!
JD, just get the Canon, any of them, you CAN'T go wrong......, and get ON with it!! ;-)

PS, I'm old, old stock!

Welcome, JD. Either the D3200 or a Rebel (T3 or later) would be a good choice. Find a store that carries both. Find out which one feels best in your hands and get it. If you can find a store that has a 15 - 30 day exchange policy, you can try both. Good Luck!
