What's With These Strange Lens Fittings?

I bought an F Mount 200 mm lens on E-Bay. The lens does not fit on my D40 body but does fit on my Vivitar 2x Teleconverter, which fits onto the camera body.

What's with these strange mount fittings? Is there anything I can do to make this lens fit my camera body?

Older Nikkor lenses need an AI conversion. They do usually fit, but can damage the body. That could be the issue, I suppose.

I don't want AI. But this lens doesn't fit the body. It does fit the teleconverter perfectly. That's the connundrum.

The AI conversion changes the mount slightly from the original F mount.. If this is an older lens ( you did not say) that might be the issue. I certainly am not saying it IS the issue.

Thanks Captain. It is an older (pre AI) lens. How do I get that modification?

Just do a Google search for "Nikon AI Conversion" - there were a lot of hits - too many to list here. Some were for do-it-yourself conversions.

I have used John White in Chicago. I had 3 lenses converted by him. I'm very happy with his work. His prices were very good, and better quality than others I have seen. Check this Website:

I e-mailed him. He only really works on Nikkor lenses but he said he would look at it and "figure it out."
