Used Sigma

Greetings all. I am considering purchasing a used Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 EX DC OS HMS lens. I have found one at KEH listed in very good condition which according to their description is the glass is good but the outside may have show some minor wear. They list this as 90 to 96% original condition and are asking $367.00 and include the front & rear caps. Amazon has a listing for a used like new which includes the box, both caps, manual, & lens hood for $340.00 + free shipping. The company is called Needs which ships from Japan. They have a seller rating of 98%. Would appreciate your opinions on these options thus far. Thanks all.

I can say I have bought from KEH. They are very good. They also have a guarantee with the purchase. I have never had to return an item to them. If they are giving it a 96%, you probably won't be able to tell the difference from a new lens.

That lens is only $519 brand new with the USA 4 year warranty. Worth the extra in my opinion. Its a good crop sensor lens, does not play well with full frames though.

Thanks for your response. This lens will be used on a Nikon D7100. 8-)

Agree. I've dealt with KEH for many many years. Their grading system for user equipment is conservative. You'll be pleased with the condition.

I use this same lens on my D7100. As a matter of fact, it is my main 'every day' lens. I like it. It is very sharp, AF is fast, & OS works well.

42nd St Photo is selling the Sigma 17-70 F2.8 for $419 for the newer contemporary version, and $379 for the older (but still great) version. Both brand new. 40% more reach.

Beware of the upsell with 42nd St. Photo. Also, most of what they advertise are import models and you need to pay more for USA models. At least that has been my experience. Never bought from them because of that.

You will have no Sigma USA warranty buying from 42nd St Photo, they are not an authorized retailer for any camera gear and sell ONLY grey market products! Beware!

Do not buy from 42nd Street Photo. They are dishonest and not an authorized Sigma dealer. That means the lens will not have a US warranty.

Sorry MT Shooter for being redundant.

KEH is local/USA - and they stand behind what they sell with ANY problems !

I would have no problem purchasing from KEH based on several positive comments. 8-)

Thanks for the warning guys. Information that would have been helpful 2 weeks ago! LOL. So far, I gotta say, very happy with the lens. Maybe that's just a post GAS honeymoon period. They're not exactly warm and fuzzy people in the store either, but I now have no choice but to give the the benefit of the doubt. I did test the lens against my kit 18-105, definitely getting sharper images especially in lower light; but now after reading the negative reviews I hope I didn't spend $419 on a lesson on Store loyalty :)
