I was just curious about this.....does it make a difference to how you store your lens when it is not on the camera body....I keep mine in the lens bag, but should the lens be facing up or should the part that connect's to the body be up?? Or does it really matter. Just curious.....Thanks Tom

Doesn't matter at all. This is 45+ years' experience responding.

Cheers,

Don't wrap it up in plastic, and you'll be OK.

used to store my lenses in the up position meaning the lens is up, then I saw a creativelive with Zack and Jody Gray and they store lenses down position so when they need to change lenses they take of lens cap and mount. Seems its a six of one and half dozen of another, but would be faster to change lenses that way.

I've heard this advice about all sorts of things - condensation, no air circulation. Products that are sold factory pre-wrapped are OK because - well, I don't know why. But when you seal something inside a plastic bag or wrap, the restricted airflow is not good. (So I've heard.)

I'm sure the plastic experts will give scientific reasons for and against this idea.

I store mine face down for that reason - easier to pick up and mount. Also, the front end is usually the wider, so they are more stable standing that way. I have a separate camera bag for my lenses with dividers between them, so they would be stable either way.

Another idea I have been meaning to put into operation: I want to put a small label on each small-end lens cap so I can see at a glance which lens is which. I could memorize the location of each lens, but that would rely on continuing brain function. I don't want to leave anything to chance. With any luck, I will continue to age.

If you are in a humid climate you do trap moisture if you wrap in air tight plastic so you are correct.

I do put my whole camera and lens in a big ziplock bag if coming in from very cold weather so as not to get condensation formings on the gear from the warm indoor/moist air. If I have a big lens I remove it and put it and the body in separate bags. Remove as soon as the temperatures equalize, a couple hours should do it closely enough. Depends on the temperature difference, obviously.

I'm just curious. Are you talking about two lenses and how to store the one that is off the camera at the moment? If you only have one lens, then it is best to just leave it on the camera all of the time. Taking lenses off the camera, as in exchanging for another lenses is where the most dirt, dust and all the other crap comes from that gets deposited on your sensor. I just read that somewhere in my never-ending journey of learning photography. :D

85mm and shorter are stowed upright - mount end at the top.
Longer lenses are always stored horizontal - mounting end to my left.

This is extremely important.

I am so glad you asked.

Longer than 85 won't fit in my Think Tank bag vertical.

Base up so I can take the cap off and mount faster.

Long lens has to fit horizontal in the bag and mount to the left because I hold the camera in my left hand and this make it easy to mount the lens.

I would have SO disappointed if nobody asked. Thank you Steve, a good straight man is hard to find.
