I have read considerably and have watched countless Youtube videos about the differences between Nikon 610 and Canon 6D. I really like the 610 but I currently have a Canon 40D with three halfway decent lenses. I don't think that you can use Canon lenses on a Nikon even with an adapter. Even if I go with the Canon 6D full frame the DX lenses will not work that well. Should I just continue to use the Canon lenses on my 40D and commit my future purchases to the Nikon 610?

Are the lenses you already have EF or L lenses? If they are, they will work on the 6D but if they are EFS lenses they will not. I have a Canon 6D and like it very much but I have read rave reviews about the Nikon 610 and it is a great camera also. If your lenses won't work on the 6D you can choose which ever camera you want because you will have to purchase lenses anyway. I hope this helps.
I've used both a 6d and a d600. The d600 produced nicer images (normal shooting conditions, not extreme low light) and was so much more intuitve to control. I sold my Canon gear and switched to Nikon because of the d600. The d610 is only better.
This is just my opinion of course.:)
I can't speak for the Canon, but I recently got a D610 replacement for the D600 I had and I find them both to be fantastic cameras that produce beautiful images. They have a really nice ergonomic "feel" to them. It just feels good in your hand with the controls thoughtfully placed.
Nikon currently has them on sale with the 24-85mmVRg lens. At f3.5 to 4.5 it is amazingly sharp for the "kit" lens. I highly recommend it. It's on my D610 most of the time and I'm sure you will like it.

"Half way decent lenses" doesn't say much. Your 40D is a crop sensor body that accept both EF AND EFS lenses. The 6D is a full frame body which will ONLY accept EF lenses. If your lenses are indeed EFS then you will have to buy all new with either the 6D OR the D610 body's.

The Canon lenses will NOT work on the Nikon.. having said that, depending on the age of the Canon lenses they may not work on a new Canon either.. (I say this because at one time Canon changed their lens couplings and I can't remember when it was.) Nikon has kept their lens coupling the same since 1987 or thereabouts. If you already have a Canon and like your lenses, I would check that body first. If you don't care (and everyone here knows that I am a NIKON fan) the definitely check the Nikon. Both make great cameras and you probably wont go wrong with either.

Please ignore this inaccurate concern ... any EF or EF-S lens that works on your 40D EOS body will work any other cropped EOS model. An EF lens will work on any EOS body regardless of sensor size. Worrying about a change from manual to electronic (auto) focus lenses from 1987 before digital existed doesn't apply to this question.
