Hi all.
Christmas is coming and I want to ask for a good, beginner, all purpose DSLR user book. A good complete, current how-to. I know there are a zillion Internet articles and videos. But I have always learned well from books and all those articles start to mush together after awhile, I lose my bookmark, if I print them I have them all over.
Does such a book exist that is current and up to date? I've been shooting with a DSLR for awhile now but still not in command of manual settings, metering, and how to make aperture, shutter speed work together with the lighting available.
Any ideas welcome! Thanks.
Maureen

makane - what camera are you using? There may be a book targeted to its features. Most of them discuss the basics you're looking for.

Great advice or check out your local library or Barnes and Noble. There must be something there to get you started at no cost and then you can make a purchase.

Understanding Exposure, by Bryan Peterson. Regardless of what camera you're using, you need to clearly understand the basics of exposure -- Bryan Peterson's book is the place to start.

What he said. Covers it all in an easy to read, easy to understand approach.

I agree with Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Exposure, 3rd. Edition". You will be amazed at what you learn and the number of "ah ha" moments. Good luck.

Here is a good book on the T3i>>>>>Canon EOS Rebel T3i/600D, From Snapshots to Great Shots, by Jeff Revell. Not sure which Rebel you are using but he has one for all of them.....Rich

Maureen, I also agree on the Bryan Peterson "Understanding Exposure, 3rd Edition". I had read "Canon EOS Rebel T3i/600D, From Snapshots to Great Shots", by Jeff Revell, which taught me all kinds of great things about my T3i, but it wasn't until I read Understanding Exposure, 3rd Edition (cover to cover, four times now), that I started "getting" photography, and how to use the camera's manual settings creatively.

If you can get two, buy both. I think you will get far more out of Understanding Exposure 3rd Edition though.

I agree with the suggestion of "Understanding Exposure" but also the "Field Guide" for your particular model Rebel. That book will tell all the secrets of your camera, and explain how to set them up. I have the "Field Guide" with me on every shoot as a reference tool. Plus, Bryan Peterson has written several other photography books, all are helpful.

I'd say other than the users manual...this is my answer.

Bryan Peteron Understanding Exposure is a must in my opinion.
His other books are also great, (learn to see creatively, etc.).
