I am no portrait photographer but I love the pose and the serious look that you have captured. While the image is sharp especially the eyes and the smocking on her dress the skin and hair seem too soft by comparison. I realize this is part of the effect that you were going for, I just think it needs to be backed off a little.

Here's the photo I started with when I applied the Orton Effect, not SOOC. (By the way, I didn't pose her. She was just sitting there like that, while 65 other children were running and crawling around her ... so prim and proper!)

While I think I would really like this in B&W I am not a big fan on the Orton effect used with this photo. It is such a nice photo in color. There is so much more detail in her face. Seeing it in color I think I would edit out some of the white spots in the background.

Like CM, my knowledge and experience in portraiture is less than limited, and neother have I been a fan of the Orton Effect, but I must say that I am definitely more-than-whelmed by the absolutely gorgeous high-key effect ol' Orton had in this child's portrait!

The "eyes" have it!

A definite WOW-Double Plus!!!

Thanks Pher! I've always been intrigued by etherial photos, but never knew how to achieve the look. The winner of this contest nailed it, as did several others. Thank you for the gracious compliment!

I love, love, love this image. The eyes are in sharp focus. I love the softness of the rest of the image, and I like the high key lighting. The child looks positively angelic in this photograph. Nicely done.

I don't know much about the Orton effect, but I very much like the way it is applied here.

I would agree with Nightski on this image, I absolutely love it. The way you applied the Orton effect and kept the eyes sharp really has a strong impact. And, the softness of the rest of the image with the high key effect works well here. I normally do not like high key images, but I really like this one, a lot. As Nightski also said, she looks angelic and I could not agree more. Well done.

To make it better two things were apparent that could use some PP. If it were mine, I would bring back the blown out hair, and clean up the dark area on her elbow. The eyes, nose, and lips are drawing a lot of attention, so as a suggestion adding some of the facial tones back in could give a better tone balance. I presume this is what Country's Mama was also suggesting.

Due to the color of the child's hair, her eye brows could use an increase in tone.

Orton Effect RESULTS

What a beautiful face.
I love the black and white as well as the color version.

I don't know what "Orton Effect" is, but I will say
the white on white is a bit much. Her beautiful
light complexion would look a little better if the back
ground was a little darker. The color version
doesn't have that issue.

Love the crisp details. focus is great.
The cute little fingers placed perfectly on the table
and the little dimple at her elbow make me just
want to give her a hug.

reminds me of the Audry Hepburn high key photo. I really like the angelic look.

Frankly, my interest in the Orton effect went away when I stopped doing the "real" Orton effect in the darkroom with slides.

Now.....I'm beginning to rethink that. I'm REALLY a fan of this photo. If I were one that voted in the contests, you would have gotten my vote.

One question, did you "bring back" her eyes, or did they just stay that impactful?
