A few more from the wine barrel.

I do struggle with focus. I think it might be about the cataract operation and needing new glasses now. I don't know.
These are a few of my recent macros from the wine barrel planter. I've been out there a lot lately. Comments are welcome.

I apologize if this is repetitive: My focus is so bad, that I use small center spot Auto-Focus. Half-depressed shutter button to lock focus on subject's eye, then re-compose, and fully depress shutter button to take photo.

Give it a try.

I'm more comfortable with it rightside up but you nailed the focus on this one.

I can't decide if the fly is out of focus or if it's motion blur.

Your doing well though. Keep at it ;)

You are too hard on yourself. The first 2 look good to me and the fly was probably flying as they do. Your mantis seems to live in the wine barrel, I take it a lot of prey are also attracted to the smell of alcohol.

Repetition is good. A reminder of all the advice that has been offered here is always good. I will concentrate on this one thing, next time.
It's actually raining hard outside this morning (the rain dance worked). I will get out there this afternoon and do the half way shutter thing. I do focus on the eyes, but I don't move to compose. I will work on this. Thanks Douglass.

Thanks oldtigger. I kind of like it this way too.

It's a miracle if not OoF. Fly was moving all over the place. This one was hand held. Thanks for the comment. I will "keep at it".

Drink more wine... I'm all for that. Ha, ha, ha! Thanks Brenda. Yes, the smell may very well be what is attracting them, but I really think it's the abundance of insects that come to the flowers and this...

Light is such a huge factor in all of this. I can't believe how important all of these parts of the whole come together to make a good image. Thanks.

That's cheating! Using a Mantid goddess statue to attract the faithful

It sure would seem so. I may have to try something similar. Maybe a fuzzy Jumper figure.

Good luck finding 'fuzzy jumper' garden art. Maybe just a generic, friendly looking spider will do. Don't get too specific. A little sign might work. Something that says "All spiders welcome."
