IS there any benefit to downloading versus buying a boxed version of a program, particularly LR3?

I prefer the boxed version. If your computer has a heart attack(?), you can just reload it. If not, you get to communicate with the software company about downloading, again.

Downloads are fine, as long as you make good backup copies of the original download, AND copy the activation key/CD key in a safe place.

I prefer to download it, I hate all the clutter the boxes create. It's real easy if you have to download again, I log into my Adobe account and click download, simple. The key code is saved in my account with Adobe as well.

Did you pay to have to code backed up?

I wasn't clear with my answer, it was in general. Not specific to LR.
Hopefully, someone will jump in with the correct answer and experience of more than one install.
Sorry, about that.
I've never had a program limit me with only one install. Even though, it may say for one use.

It's pretty much six of one/ half dozen of the other. Both have their advantages. When you download you will usually get the very latest version, but you have to print out the manual if you want in on paper(or save the pdf.) Sometimes the boxed copy comes with the manual and might require an on-line upgrade to the very latest version. But as Jay mentioned, if your computer has a h'attack you'll have a copy of the software handy. If you download though just save a copy of the d'load with the key #, to a disc.
I really breaks down to where you are at when you decide you want to buy it. if it's on sale in the store, grab it. If at home(and your comfortable) download it.

I get the box version whenever possible. I do all my post processing on a stand alone, non-internet computer, to minimize any possibility of a virus wiping me out.

Nope, they have a little list of the programs I have purchased for download (CS5, Elements 8, and LR3). When I click on the selected program, it offers all my information (including serial code) and offers me the choice to download again. :)

Depends. I prefer boxed versions, especially if they come with a manual. I just upgraded to Photoshop CS5, and the boxed version had no manual, but it did come with a 30-day trial version of Lightroom 3, which I will try one of these days. I think the days of hard-copy manuals are over, and I'm sorry about that. I find it's really hard to keep my fingers in place on two or three pages of a PDF.

Funny you ask this question today! I bought and did the download version. Which worked fine. However recently I purchased another computer and downloaded lightroom again. I just learned that there was some kind of glitch when I downloaded it and there are some component panels missing (still learning all the editing techniques).

I suggest getting the software!

Nope! Just download the demo and register it with your serial number. :)
