Going to purchase my daughter-in-law a camera for Christmas to record the grand kids one girl 3 yrs. old and a boy to arrive December 31. Any preferences from you guys. I read this site all the time and respect your opinions. I see the Canon SX50 mentioned all the time and I am partial to Canon myself. Thanks for your help. Forgot to mention right now there is only about $3.00 difference in the price.

I have the SX50 and love it. Has your daughter-in-law expressd an opinion on a camera she would like? While I really like my SX50, she may prefer something else. If she has no camera wish list, then I think she would enjoy the SX50 and get a lot of use out of it.

Well she likes the Nikon brand but has been using my Canon T2i and I want it back (ha ha). I think she would be happy with either. I just saw that the Nikon had a 60x range and the Canon only has 50x. I am not that familiar with the Nikon. But I thought since there was little difference it may be a better camera. Thanks

There's quite a difference in feel between the SX50 and an earlier Nikon P that I tried out, the 510. But if she doesn't shoot for hours every day, that may not matter :)

Lots of happy folks have the SX50 (including me :) ). And there's much help and advice here on UHH!

Thanks I hear the SX50 mentioned more on here than I do the Nikon P600. Just didn't not get the best for the money. Both are in my Price range and she does and will do mostly snapshots and video of the kids.

Sometimes it doesn't matter which is "best". It can matter more if you can find help when you need it. There are so many SX50 owners here you or your daughter would get lots of answers to any post starting with "SX-50: How do I...."

Now that is a very good point. And I already have the software on my computer for the Canon and she is familiar with it. Great ideas thanks alot.

For taking pictures of grand kids She probably wont need the long reach of either camera but if She's already familiar with the Canon and have software for it, get the Canon.

I bought a P600 and returned it. I bought an SX60HS and I really like it. The SX50 should be very good.

The two main reasons for choosing the SX50 over the P600:
1) RAW support
2) Hot shoe for flash

I am glad to hear someone has had their hands on the P600. I didn't realize that it would support RAW. I have to be honest I was leaning toward the SX50 already. Thanks for your quick responses. If I can find one I and getting the SX50.

I haven't look recently at the Nikon P line, but last I looked they did not have a hot shoe for the times when something more powerful than the built in flash is needed. The SX50 does have the hot shoe.
