I need assistance please. my son is getting married this weekend, no I'm not doing all the pictures, but I plan on taking some pictures, it's a night time wedding and I have been practicing with flash, however I need to know what is the best setting to leave my camera on? I want to get the lighting from the candles and lights, and not have it totally blown out by the flash. Any suggestions.

For starters, a descriptive title would help us help you.
"Wedding photography exposure help" would be a good one.
You can change the topic title for up to an hour after you post.
Look above your screen name for "Edit topic title"
Cheers!

Need more information. Is the wedding in a church or outdoors or in a some other kind of building? Is it a large wedding 1,500 people, 50 people, just family? What is the setting for the reception?

What Camera?.. What Flash?.. Distances, Ambient lighting?, Group shots, Portraits or action shots, etc. What exactly do you want to do.
My Crystal Ball is a bit foggy this morning.

Ok, outdoor in a garden/landscaping business, with xmas lights and candles, lanterns. very romantic. about 70 people total. Reception is at same place following wedding. I do have someone taking pictures of the wedding ceremony, I'm just looking for advice to get pictures for the reception. my son told me that I have to have fun, and not worry about pictures, but I love taking the pictures. If anyone is on FB, you can look it up at Earthscapes Garden Room. Palm Harbor, FL I just want to make sure I have some good photos for myself.

Canon Rebel xs, Canon Speedlite 430EX II , any kinda shots I can get pretty much. lens right now is 18-200, I also have a kit lens, and a 50mm. I just don't want the flash to take over, I would love to get some pictures with the Ambient lighting, (lanterns, white xmas lighting, candles)

You didn't mention a camera, lens or flash. So this is a generic answer. But by going by what you said I'd think to use the widest aperture possible(low f number) and a higher ISO(1200 or more) and on Aperture Priority for portraiture. You'll want to blur (bokeh) the lights and candles in the background to avoid flare.
If you want the lights and candles clear, like a group shot then stop down the aperture to increase depth of field and adjust accordingly.
BEST YET<>>>Give your camera to the photographer and have him take a few shots with it. YOU,.. Relax and enjoy your son's wedding. It only happens once!
Besides, you don't want the photographer attempting to shoot when YOU have a camera stuck in your face. It's a special day for your Whole Family to Enjoy. Live it!

Only one suggestion, do not get on the way of the official photographer, even if it is an unpaid friend of theirs.

Plus, this being your son you should have other things to do like thanking god someone else has to take care of him now!!! (j/k)

To be honest, I just take a P&S to weddings for shots of interest to me. I want to enjoy the event. If I take full gear, I can't do that.

Thanks, getting the point to forget about it and enjoy my son's wedding. We shall see, I still have to have a few pictures and I will muttle through it. I just might post a few if any of them come out.

Ron, maybe YOU'RE just kidding, but two of my three sons lived at home until they got married (actually one bought a house and moved because he was getting married. The girls had long since moved out. Anyway, the night after the last son got married, my wife and I had to start practicing cooking for two - and what a relief that was. We finally had a guest room, less laundry, no more oil stains in the driveway and nobody asking to " borrow" twenty dollars. And, surprisingly, one of the sons is still with his first wife!

Start at f5.6, shutter speed at 80 and up your flash at +3. Go from there.

You title is fine.
