I like both of these, but would like to hear some pros and cons comparing the two.

What do you think the A77 offers over the D90? Thank you for your reply.

I don't know anything about the D90 from personal experience. However, I HAVE been shooting the A77 for the last 3 years.

It is an EXCELLENT camera.

Here is a comparison from DxOMark:

http://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Compare/Side-by-side/Sony-SLT-Alpha-77-versus-Nikon-D90___734_439

The Sony has higher image quality which is to be expected from a newer, more technologically advanced camera.

Frame burst rate is also higher for the A77. The A77 has built in GPS and 3 memory presets, allowing you to store all shooting parameters and recall them instantly, allowing you to instantly go from landscape to bird in flight with the flick of a switch.

Additionally, the Sony has a 24.3 megapixel Sensor compared to a 12.3 MP sensor in the D90, so you can capture more detail and enlarge sharper pictures with the A77.

The Sony has more autofocus points, stereo sound recording for movies, more move capture options, and a much wider ISO range (50-25600 for the A77, compared to 100-6400 for the Nikon).

The Sony is a whole generation ahead of the Nikon, and the performance of the two cameras show it.

The A77 also has Sony proprietary software like in camera: HDR, sweep panorama, and WYSIWYG viewfinder. - Not sure if the II version has Clear Image Zoom ??

As nice as the D90 was (is), its much older technology than the Sony A77. The biggest difference by far is the sensor resolution at 12 for the D90 compared to 24 for the A77.
Now if you compare the A77 to Nikons 24mm D7100 model, you would likely get a different opinion entirely.

^^^Yep; the D7100 came along a year AFTER the original A77 and it addressed many of the advantages the Sony had over the previous generation D7000.

The new A77mkII moves the balance of power BACK into Sony's court though. ;)

The Smart Teleconverter function.

It basically crops the image to give you a larger, lower pixel count view.

1.4X and 2.0X... a great way to REALLY stretch out.

With my 70-300mm G lens I get a 450mm effective view at the long end because of the APS-C crop factor. With the 2X setting on the Smart Teleconverter engaged, that takes me up to a 900mm equivalent. HARD to beat. ;)

But, Clear Image Zoom does NOT lower the pixel count ! It interpolates and manufactures pixels .......-and it works - VERY WELL.

Smart Teleconverter is just an electronic crop. :(

I can go from a 15MP JPEG image to a 5MP image at the push of a button, but the magnification is usually worth it.
