In a post yesterday, Imagesintime posted a link to the Lens Rentals site that shows the weather sealing of the 7Dll. Canon has indicated that it has 4x the sealing of the previous 7l. But what the heck did THAT mean?
I've wanted a camera that I can shoot in open rain with NO protection, so as to be able to work all the functions and menus, easily and freely.
Enter the 7Dmkll!!
In the accompanying article, the sealing is explained and demystified in detail. WOW, that is some heavy duty sealing! I feel this camera can indeed shoot in the open rain, with an equivalent lens of course! Being able to do sports and nature in the rain is going to be big for some shooters. And in a $1799 body!! :thumbup:
Is the 7ll as weather sealed as the pro cameras? Maybe more? It must certainly be a contender for the best sealed camera. It was hinted that you could put it under a faucet.
What else has THAT much sealing, short of an underwater camera! I'd like to see it! ;-)

It is good if it has pro grade weather sealing. However this has not been a problem for me with Nikon D600 and D200 in rain and much worse than rain occasionally. Once I was was tied to a boat deck on a rescue boat chasing another boat at 30 knots in bad weather and big waves. Then I was sure I had drowned my cameras when the waves hit me and my gear but to my surprise nothing happened except that I had to change all my clothes after this trip. I just keep on taking pics with them and lost a possible excuse for upgrade. I recommend you try this with the Canon to see if it has good weather sealing.

It is all about the sensor!!!!

From the wisdom in those comments I ”KNOW” that all I need to take a great picture in the rain is a superior sensor that is coated in rubber!!!

I don't know... I had an older camera die on me after getter wet while shooting football in the rain. This was despite protective plastic covering.
Ever since then I've been gun shy about shooting in rain.

Even with advanced weather sealing I wouldn't be comfortable using my new $1,800 MK II out in a driving rain unless someone was paying me very big bucks and it was a once in a lifetime situation.

If they want to supply the gear I'll happily use their stuff out in the rain, but if it's my personal camera, I'm gonna have to be more careful with it.

For my wildlife photography, if it's pouring rain, I'm not going out. I'll just wait until the next day. The birds will be there in nice weather too. :)

I shoot cyclocross, it's a winter sport and it happens rain and shine and preferably rain or snow, depending on where you live! I've shot it with my 5ll, but I carry an old t-shirt with me that I use to cover the camera with when it's coming down and also to wipe the camera off with. It's worked well. I find the rain sleeves difficult to use since I'm not on support and use a heavy lens.
I also have a couple of projects that I want to undertake that will require shooting when raining. I will still be as careful a possible. But this camera can open up a whole new realm of possibilities that before where only there for those with the pro bodies.
We are used to seeing shots in good light with good color etc. It's like fair-weather shooting, that's what most photographers are, fair-weather shooters because they are afraid to get their gear wet.
It's time to start documenting what happens when it's raining. Both animals soaking wet and up-turned umbrellas. To me this is exciting and it's all possible because Canon made us an inexpensive, highly weather-sealed body!! :thumbup:
It's time to put that Drop & Dunk or Thrills & Spills $79 insurance policy to WORK for you!! :lol: :lol:

I lived in Seattle for over 40 years and never shot in the rain where I let the rain hit my camera. You should protect the camera with whatever is available. Why ask for trouble?

Personally, I don't much care to be out in the rain for any reason! As a kid on the farm I can remember a well used phrase: "Doesn't have enough sense to come in out of the rain". I think that was directed towards me more then once! Not real fond of snow and cold weather anymore either! :)

Pentax DSLRs are sealed, and they have sealed lenses to go with them. I don't know how to determine which company's sealing system is best.
