I had trouble finding a D7000 battery (EN-EL15). I finally got one for $49 from Crutchfield. It's ordered and confirmed, but not yet delivered.

The D7000 was the only Nikon that used the En-El15 battery, that was until the D800 was announced using it. Might be a rush on them. I saw that my local Best Buy had 3 of them on the rack yesterday. I already have a spare plus a AA battery holder for my MB-D11 grip. Don't want to run out of power in the middle of nowhere!
I have noticed that when I mount it on the tripod with the grip AND my 28-300mm lens that there is a little movement between the grip and the body. I think I will stop and get an o-ring for that stud this afternoon and try it! I have never noticed a problem other that that. I wish the 28-300mm lens had a tripod collar anyway.
Its also nice that the D7000 lets you choose which battery to use first when the grip is on, having 2 batteries loaded at once is a VERY good thing!

I've never had a battery run out on me when I needed it, and I have spares for other cameras. For now, Nikon is the only supplier for this battery. Eventually, they'll be available for a few dollars. I doubt that I could justify the cost of that grip, since I can carry an extra battery with me.
The cheap grip imitations seem to work, except that the twist thing for the battery compartment breaks right off.

I also have never run out of power! This is a great battery, I have an extra just in case but never had to use it. I recently went to italy and took hundreds of pictures over three hundred before I wanted to re charge.
I feel I have no need for a grip as I shoot only for recreation! If I was a pro maybe a different story. The grip does make your camera look more pro and also increases weight.
I am a big guy at 6'5" and I like the grip as the D7000 is a kind of small body and the grip gives it better feel for me, plus I am used to the verticle shutter feature from my F4s, F5 and D1x bodies. Makes the D7000 feel better to me.

I like the idea of the controls being available when the camera is moved to vertical.
I had the same problem a few months back getting one for my D5100. The shortage cleared in a couple of weeks.
There were a couple of outfits that had a few left and took advantage and upped the price. Best to wait it out.
I have an idea they may be built in batches and when a batch runs out everyone runs out at about the same time till another batch is built and distributed.
There are cheap copies available with the same number that I know don't work on a D3100 or D5100 so stay away from them. Some tell you they don't work, some don't.

I noticed that price increase. I used to see them everywhere for $49. Now they're well over $50, if you can find them. I was glad that Crutchfield had them at a good price. I've been buying from Crutchfield since 1980 - very good company.
The Nikon EN-EL14 is also in very short supply. There are some aftermarket EN-EL14s available on the net, but only those from Nikon will work in the D3100.
The Nikon V1 uses the En-EL 15, increasing the demand.
I say Hang in there, I had to wait for the batteries for my Nikon D7000 but eventually everyone had them. I didn't have to wait that long either. This always happens when a new camera comes out.
