Looks really cold. But a beautiful shot and the down load is pretty awesome!

Love this pic. I like the way you take simple things and make art of it.

Beautiful technique, great image...except for :
the tip of the husk on the left seems to contact the...thing...that's OOF in the BG...distracting and confusing.
Also, the large amount of negative space on the right? Is there a reason for that?
A corn stalk is is a tall thing....why a portrait of just one un-harvested ear.?
Compared with the composition of your first one, this seems unduly constricted to me.
Sort of disjointed thoughts, but due to them I much prefer your first version.

Yes, that is a disappointment to me too. Another try is planned.

Yes, I was trying to avoid the sun on the left ... It was darn cold out there and I was having trouble deciding how to deal with that.

I want the subject to be unequivocal. I am very happy with that composition choice.

Why? This one includes more environment ... so I don't understand what you mean by constricted.

Whilst I prefer the colour and detail in this version I feel robbed by the top being cut of and I don't think that it should be touching the left side of the frame. Exposure and detail spot on, the framing, as we say over here, is a bit iffy ;)
Edit: the stalk should be moved off centre closer to the right.
One other thing was factoring into my framing of the subject. I wanted a barren background .. barren of trees. See the trees to the right? I know .. no big deal. The wide angle lens has made them so insignificant that they don't bother me at all .. but when I was out there i forgot that the trees would be made to look so insignificant by my ultra wide. I could have had a much better composition if I had moved the frame more to the right moving myself to the left. I would have had more room to work with while trying to keep the sun out of my frame. It was a good exercise for me.

Yep .. top of the stalk ... I can do that on Friday .. think I am going to have another go with the ultra wide. Monday I can do the 50mm.
I do feel that this is a stronger, more compelling image than the earlier version. I get a real sense of cold, hostile bleakness. With the extra background detail revealed, the cornstalk's setting is presented more effectively to the viewer. And that you closed in on the subject I think works quite well too.

Nightski,
This picture leaves me cold, but that's a good thing. I like this better than the other, it definitely gives that sense of cold. I personally like the focus and I believe the amount of background left in is just right gives aerfect wintery feel

Yes the sky is to harsh in the first one compared to this one.:):) Looking forward to the next one.:)

I like this one much better. I am going to comment before reading the others.
Your exposure and focus are perfect. I think you have the background at just the right amount of blur. I would like to see the whole thing moved over to the right. The husk is so close to the left edge is feels crowded. I think it needs a little room to blow in the wind. I think you could do without some of that extra to the right.
Too much to dead center for me. Move the stalk to the right with the ear and husk hanging into the frame. Can't wait to see number 3.
