Hanjin Germany - Massive Container Ship

I had a meeting across the bay in Oakland a few weeks back and decided to try the Golden Gate Ferry. I've lived in SF for nearly 30 years and have only been on the commuter ferry a couple times many years ago.

It was quite pleasant and so were the views. I took a few shots of the container ship Hanjin Germany. This beast is 1145 feet long and 151 feet wide. This thing holds containers 19 wide as you can see in the last shot. MASSIVE! See below for 4 shots taken with my 7D with a Canon 18-200mm lens.

Could you imagine getting hit with a high wind advisory while toodling along in that monster? It's not like you can just pull over and wait it out.

Hi Mike, I bet it wouldn't be fun. I served in the Navy for several years. This container ship is bigger than the carrier I was on. We went through some storms for sure.

We all have read about how many of these semi-trailer sized containers are lost at sea each year....yikes! Yep, they sure can't pull over and wait out a storm.

I am surprised that the ship is so high in the water with so much cargo. Are the containers empty? Or is that normal?

Yes, I see what you mean and to be honest, I'm not sure. I suspect that the gas tank is empty and when it takes on fuel, it settles down closer to the waterline. Just my guess???
