It could happen to you so I'm reminding everyone....

Yesterday, the hard drive in my fairly new computer crashed. I do have external drives that I'm pretty good about saving photographs when I'm done with them but not so diligent when it comes to other information. It was under warranty and housecalls so that part is covered but that doesn't restore the myriad of little notes I made for myself that now are no longer available.

It went pretty much without warning. Maintenance checks every week went through wth flying colors. A Windows message came up that there was a hard drive problem, back up the computer. I tried to but the backup failed and then came the blue screen. Now it will not boot even with a recovery disk. I'm faced with seeing how diligent I was with recording things OUTSIDE of the computer. Undoubtedly, there will be things that I will never recover...hopefully nothing important.

Hard drives all have a life span, and we all hope that will be forever, but it isn't. I hope you get most of your info recovered!

My HD crashed and someone told me about a hard drive case at Fry's. I got a new hard drive and installed the OS, and then used the old HD as an external HD through a USB cable, and was able to recover all of my data. The thing cost $10, and it was a lifesaver. There are two types, one's for older drives and one's for newer ones. Check it out.

Went to Fry's website but couldn't find what you refer to. Can you be more specific with more details on the hardware, etc.?

I soooo feel empathy for you. My computer died a few months ago and I didn't even get blue screen...I got the black screen of death. Turned out to be the motherboard and the hard drive was essentially okay so I haven't lost all my photographs, but I have had to live with this dinosaur replacement that was dragged from the depths of the goodwill closet for a few months now while I waited for parts and repair. Mine will be home soon and I will be doin' the Snoopy Dance for a week. I do hope things turn out well for you. I'll keep my fingers and toes crossed.

I live in alpharetta ga, i would recommend "peachtree computer ", to try and save any files in your hard drive. They are a bunch of young guys, that really know what they are doing. I had a deadly virus they removed for $79.oo, plus they installed safeguards for free. They saved everything.

You may have to go there and ask for it. It's just a cheap plastic case that your HD drive fits inside of, and there's a connector on it that fits into the connector on the HD, and then accepts the USB cable that's included. I explained to the guy what I needed, and he knew exactly what I was talking about. Best Buy and Radio Shack might carry it, too, but I'm not sure about that. Good luck.

O, you guys crack me up. I just don't think swans are edible. I think there's a taboo against turning them into tenders, fingers or roasted. Something about the way they mate for life. I'm still waiting for mine, lifemate that is.

I am also familiar with the little piece of equipment tschmath is talking about. I don't own one, but my computer guru does and they are a lifesaver for sure when I've had hard drive troubles. You can probably get one on-line from a place like tiger direct and I'm sure there's someone on here who can give you other companies or places to look.

And like Elle, my computer is relatively new, yet it has had more problems in the two years I've used it than this idjit dinosaur computer ever thought about. Maybe it's because I put so many more miles on the newer one. Ya'll are gonna have to excuse me now...I'm getting a bit ditzie....dizzy.

Those boxes are invaluable. I have three! They essentially convert and internal HD to an external HD and connect with the computer through a USB connection. I don't think I've lost files, but then again, my brain is limited to 10 files Not 245,000,000!

For the pasts 4 years, I have been using Carbonite for 3 home computers. Back-up and retrieval is smooth. It will take a while initially to upload to Carbonite, but it operates in the background. Retrieval is quick. If you do decide to try Carbonite, please use my name and e-mail for referral. I DON'T WORK FOR CARBONITE BUT I WOULD GAIN ADDITIONAL FREE MONTHS SERVICE. Thanks.
