Killing a few minutes with the black foamie thing....
I was waiting for my wife to get home and I saw a willing subject in my smaller Pug Gracie...so I pulled out the black foamie thing and took a shot.
I bounced the flash into the corner of the room and back to her...it was actually pointed about 45 degrees shooting over my left shoulder away from Gracie.
The first shot is her...the lighting isn't great...I didn't try really to get the ratios and she wasn't very willing to position herself :)
The other shot is a picture of my expensive "rig"...the black foamie thing with a full CTO gel on the front.
The black foamie thing acts as a "flag" stopping light from hitting Gracie but allowing it to hit the wall and come back to light the right side of her face.
Light was bounced to my left, her right
The black foamie thing
Very nice, like how you used your 'black foamie thing' and your dog is cute as can be.
Thanks for reminding me! I bought my foamie thing but have forgotten to try it. Now....where did I put it??

haha, nice picture...very candid.
I never tried a black foamie thing. Very interesting.
"killing a few minutes with the black foamie thing" I once drank a black foamie thing and it tried to kill me...I think my lights went out, I know they bounced off the wall...

We have two sisters and a younger little girl, and they keep us entertained all day. Very funny little dogs.

The black foamie thing is a flag. It's made of craft foam that you can buy at the craft store for 40 cents a sheet that will make 2 or 3 black foamie things each.
It's designed to allow you to bounce your onboard speedlight off of a wall while not allowing any flash to hit the subject directly, which creates a huge "softbox".
Bouncing flash off of a wall is desirable because it mimics the position of a studio softbox at about 45 deg to the subject.
You automatically get flattering DIRECTIONAL light.
I'll say that my example sucks...it wasn't very good at all to show how this works (my light wasn't very directional at all) but you have to work with what you got and she wasn't cooperating :)
Here is a link to a video showing the black foamie thing in action.

In all seriousness, what would be really useful is a black foamy thingee with a silver/white. I.e., white on one side and black on the other. The inside, next to the strobe head would bounce a stronger, harder light to the wall or ceiling or corner and the black on the outside would act as a gobo.
Instead of a silly name like "black foamie thing" we could simply call it the "oreo."
If you were truly serious...you could bring in the velcro troops and make the inside a detachable white sheet. I have a name for it but some of you would find it a bit too political................

Here's an explanation of why this guy likes the black foam. The combo black/white sounds like a great idea. How you wold do that is another question.
