It seems that every virus protector program out there thinks they're the best when you read about them. So, those of you with many years experience with, or those of you who know about total protection for your computer against outside influences, what would be your advice? What are the best computer protectors on the market and what makes them good? Do you have a preference?

ESET Nod32 has been rated the highest by AV Comparatives for the past 6 years. It's the only AV that I will use and the only one that I recommend to my customers.

Norton does slow down the system a bit plus it takes up a ton of space.

I've always had McAfee Total Protection and as much as I hate to say "never," I've not had a malware caused problem while using it. I highly reccommend it to all my friends, family and customers.
McAfee works scemelessly in the background and updates itself quietly. As it should. McAfee also protects a lot of Corporate America

AVGfree isn't bad for those on a tight budget. But if you can afford it, go with McAfee.

Actually Giant Microsoft makes one virus protection program free. " Microsoft Security Essentials "

Keeps live protection on your computer.

And now the linux guy speaks. On my M$ machine - I need one to support my people - I run Microsoft security Essentials and the paid for version of MalwareBytes Anti Malware. Between the two of them, my WinDoze machine is as secure as my Linux machines.

MSE has a very light resource footprint and works very well. MBAM also has a light footprint and runs down there by the clock keeping you from getting to the sites that drop BS on your machine. MBAM database is updated more than 3 times a day.

I believe Norton's and McAfee are resource hogs. I've used the free Microsoft Security Essentials for a long time, and feel good about it. It seems to work as expected and it's not overly intrusive to my normal work.

Over the years I've used Norton, McAfee, AVG and now Kaspersky. Norton actually created an issue so I'd never recommend Norton. McAfee worked fine but it was a resource hog as stated above. AVG (paid version) is good and still use it on my wife's system. As I said I now use Kaspersky and really like that it never gets in my way but will alert me to sites that have known virus history.
