I believe the first time I ever saw photographs of this particular area was in National Geographic Magazine during the '50's.

It's been photographed many time since by many of the leading photographers of the Southwest. I've never seen a less than beautiful photo of the area.

Hello, You have the wring information. This formation is called the Wave and it is in the Coyote Buttes area in the Paria wilderness area in northern arizona. This place is not secret, all you have to do is get a permit to go in. I takes about 6 months to get a permit to go in and you contact the Arizona Strip Interpretation Center for permits. You have to hike in, about 2.5 miles and it is not an easy hike, you need water and some good shoes. They only issue about 10 permits a day to go in. People that show up at the ranger station nearby can take a chance on winning a permit because there is a drawing every day so extra people can go in. The wave is a wonderful place to see, I have been there several times. the best time to go is in the late fall, winter or early spring. In the summer time the temperature can reach 120 and its not a good hike under those conditions. You are asked to wear soft sole shoes when you go there because of the soft sandstone rock. There are mountain lions in the area, I was followed by one once, I never saw the animal but I could smell cat urine when I got to a certain point on the hike and its a smell that you never forget. The wave is an amazing destination and you should see it at least once.

This location is on my "bucket list" so anyone with information and good photo shot locations, I would appreciate your input. I was thinking of going in the next few months before it gets too hot. Thanks for your help.

In order to be able to go to the Wave you must get a permit and it usually takes about 6 months of planning to get one. Contact the Arizona Strip Interpretation Center. The hike to the Wave is about 2.5 miles and you have to know what to look for when you go in. When you finally get to the Wave you will see that it is really a small area and shooting it is self explanatory. The hard part is getting there. The hike is not that hard, there is some up and down hiking and climbing the first hill is work. You will run into sand areas and when you finally get to the wave there is a sand area that you have to get up and thats hard. Bring at least 3 quarts of water and food to eat. There is a ranger station where you can take a chance on getting one of the daily permits that are given out, otherwise permits can be acquired by mail. A little investigating about this will get you the needed information. Going to the wave is a real experience, I have been there 3 times and I had no problem getting a permit it just took a while. Dont go when its hot, its like an oven out there. Choose a cool time of the year to go.
