I am in a quandary looking for a new Nikon lens.
I have the 24-70 and 70-200. My wife would like a f2.8 zoom, but not as heavy as the above, to replace her 24-85 Kit lens.

Any suggestions please.

Not a Nikkor lens, but I used a Sigma 17-70 F2.8-4 Macro OS as my everyday lens and find it to me an exceptional lens and not terribly heavy. Not exactly the as you want but worth a look.

F2.8 lenses are going to be heavy, no matter the brand. It takes a lot of glass to make a lens that fast, and glass is heavy. F4 versions of both lenses mentioned are much lighter and only 1 stop slower.

"You have to pay the fiddler if you want to dance!"
As MT said a f2.8 is going to be heavy and the gains of a fixed f4 won't be of much benefit since the 24-85 has a maximum aperture of f3.5 and f4.5 at the long end.
That is my walk-around lens on my D610 and I like it a lot. What are her concerns or does she just "want" a new lens?

Thanks for all of your replies guys.

Her indoors has a D600 has, hopefully recovered from an olecranon fracture and was hoping for a faster lens with more zoom. Reckons my 24-70 is too heavy. I thought that at first, but now would not be without it.

No wonder I could not find what she thinks she needs, as there is no such thing.

I have been reading about the 24-120 (f4!) ED VR. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience of this one please - is it worth the $$$'s.

Nikons 24-120mm F4 VR is my favorite grab and go lens. Its almost never off my Df. Its a great performer at a good price.

Why not try shooting with a prime? A 50mm 1.8 is fairly light whether you get a d or a g lens.

It's a great lens and always on one camera or the other. Yes it's worth the price. Some prefer the 28-300.

Thanks MTShooter. I will certainly look into the 24-120. Never seen one and our nearest dealer is over 100 miles away. This might satisfy her demands. I have a 50mm 1.4 - but it has no zoom (She doesn't like it!) However, I do. Can't win......

I am thinking about the 24-120 as well, but am always surprised how well I do with the Nikkor DX 35mm f1.8 and a little "foot zoom". Very sharp, excellent color, and light weight.

I've been a pro for 52 years, had every camera from Speed Graphic to Robot Royal. Now shoot with a Nikon D4 and have 9 Nikon lens's
My most used and loved is the 24-120mm f4. I never leave home without it.

This is a decent lens, smaller, longer zoom than the 24-70, but not quite as sharp.

I'm impressed! Did you open the lens or was it an external piece? Not sure I would ever open a lens as a do-it-yourselfer!📷
