Nikon SB700 Speedlight

I'm looking to purchase my first speedlight for a Nikon D300s. I'd appreciate opinions on the Nikon SB 700 in particular. At first it will be used mostly for taking pics of my nieces and nephews with my 50 & 35mm f1.8 lenses but I'm also interested in using it with my Tokina 11-16 f2.8. I wonder if it will cover the wide angle @ 11-16mm and how it might work with a Tokina 100 Macro...
Anyone have suggestions or opinions ?

To my understanding, there is very little difference between the Nikon SB-600 (discontinued) and the replacement SB-700. I suspect what could be done with a 600 is applicable to a 700, so you may learn more by researching photographer experiences with a 600. I use an SB-600 to power my O-Flash for macro-photography.

I'm using SB700's and they are very good. Try going to YouTube and entering SB700. It is a versatile unit.

Look for reviews online, like kenrockwell.com.

I bought an SB700 back in November and have to say it is a marvelous machine.

However I have noticed I don't use it hardly at all since I bought my 35mm f1.8 lens and have learned that ISOs up to at least 1600 don't show noise with my D5100.

I have both the Nikon SB-700 and the Tokina 11-16 mm F2.8, and the speedlight works just fine. I prefer when using that lens to bounce light off the ceiling. If you use the direct flash AND have the lens hood mounted, a shadow from the hood is possible. The on-camera flash leaves a large shadow.

Nikon has a contraption that costs about $15 you can put over your on-camera flash. It still works fine to trigger the SB700 off-camera but doesn't affect your image.

I haven't purchased it yet but intend to.

I'm aware of that, but I think one could easily improvise to block the flash. Experimenting with that is on my (long) list of things to do.
