Compared the Canon SX50 To SX60

Yesterday my wife and I went to Best Buy to compare the two cameras side by side. We have the SX50, so we brought it along. The first thing we notice was the button layout on the SX60 is much better than the SX50. On the 50 my wife is constantly hitting the control wheel on the back, then she hands it to me and says "fix it". So I turn off whatever was accidentally turned on and we're good for awhile. But on the SX60, they left more room for your thumb and recessed the buttons a little. If everything else was equal we would have bought it right there on the spot. Buuuttttt!!!!!! The autofocus is just terrible. We compared by focusing on the same spot with both cameras at the same time. It didn't matter if it was close up, far away, wide angle, telephoto or everywhere in between the SX 50 was faster. And the further the lens was extended the worse it got. When the SX60 was fully extended it was at least 2 seconds slower than the SX50. It was like watching paint dry waiting for that thing to focus. All things considered, even with the improvements to the SX60, the autofocus is a BIG deal breaker for us. We are going to keep our 50, and I'll just deal with the "fix it's" when they happen. Maybe the SX70 !!!

Thanks for your topic. Good to know these things before investing $550.

Good information. I use the SX 50 as a second camera and I am very please with it overall. However, I am constantly turning on the timer with the heel of my hand because it touches the control wheel. Yet I have never found it to be a good practice to upgrade cameras to the next model. There normally just aren't enough new features to justify the cost. I normally wait for a couple of upgrades. Maybe there will be an SX 70.

That's why I'm hanging on to my SX40 and have gone to some Fuji gear to supplement it. The 40 is a veteran of 3 weeks in France, and the same time frame in both Eastern Europe and St. Croix.

I have found just the opposite with the hundreds of photos I have taken. I am really impressed with the AF Tracking especially. My main complaint is with the soft focus compared to the SX50. I trust when ACR supports the RAW files, I'll be able to correct that.

I love my SX50 - I could not imagine any scenario that would justify me spending $550 for the SX60. Ok, it's a little longer reach, but my 50 has plenty and I never find myself wanting for more. I bought mine for $349 before the SX60 hit the market. Now, there are deals galore on the SX50.

I like my SX60HS. I tried the HX400v and P600 and returned both of them. I have an RX100 and I really like it. I also like my other cameras. To each his own, I suppose.

Now that is a good thought!
