Question RE: Regular SD vs Micro SD

I have a question that I probably already know the answer to but I'm going to ask it anyway.

Many, if not most, digital cameras these days use SD cards for storage of pictures taken. We all know that. Here is my off-the-wall question: Is it possible to use a Micro SD card with the adapter in place of a regular, or should I say 'full size', SD card?

Just a thought I had and, what the hey, why not ask those that know more about these cameras then I do? Some of you may think I am being silly, but believe me, I am not.

Yes. With the appropriate adapter, a micro SD will fit & function in a standard SD slot.

yes, I would think you could.
I've got two micro SC cards that both came with an adapter. One in my Kobo e-reader, the other one in my Samsung tablet.
When I want to copy "stuff" directly to the Micro SD card, I pop them into the adapter, then into the card reader and it works just fine. I'd expect the same for a camera. Just make sure it is seated properly in the adapter before you use it.

Makes me wonder though, why would you want to use a micro SD in your camera?

You can use either one.

What is the difference between a micro SC card and a micro SD card?

Thanks all for the quick replies. I really don't know that I ever will use one, but the question popped in to my head and I just had to ask. I was always taught you will never learn if you don't ask.

The fact that you can put the card in your camera doesn't mean it will do what you want it to. If your camera calls for a fast card or large capacity to write files the micro card may fit but may not meet the camera's operating specifications. If you are using a point and shoot camera, you should be fine.

Thanks Romantic. I had not thought about the speed, just the size. As a matter of fact, I really haven't checked out any micro cards to begin with. Are they not rated the same as the others?

Well, let's see....
Actually, if you read my post again, I'm sure you can apply my excuse that it's a slip of the finger...
And because the phone rang just as I finished the post, I didn't read it over before posting.

Yes, in fact I currently have one of each in my D600 (One for RAW and one for JPG) and they work quite well.

These are two separate things - speed and size.

SD card speed is identified by the Class of the card. The higher the class number, the higher the speed. Today's SD cards are typically class 10 and above. Most cameras today have memory buffers. Depends on the buffer size and how many frames/sec you shoot. SD card speed is important when the buffer overflows.

SD card has two sizes - regular and micro. They work equally well on cameras. But micros have more uses. I recently upgraded my micro sd card on my tablet from 32 to 64G. And use the 32G micro SD card in my camera to replace the current 16G.

When I went shopping for a tablet, I discovered that the SD card that usable in them is the micro SD. The salesman stated that in order to transfer images from my camera to the tablet, I'd need to use the micro with adapter, but that some cameras don't know how to handle them, apparently. So it's a trial at best. Also, he didn't have any micros that were class 10 and claimed they weren't available. I think that's probably incorrect.

Tell him to fly a kite! Of course they are available.
Just so this won't turn into a "yes, it does, no it doesn't" match (I'm good at that!), here's a link to one of our local stores showing several Micro SD cards:

I have used both micro (with adapter) and regular SD in my cameras (SX50 and D5100). The only problem I ran into with the micros is that you have to be careful when inserting the adapter into the camera to make sure the chip doesn't slide slightly out. A couple of times I had to remove and reinsert the chip into the adapter so that it would make contact.

Read/write rates for microSD cards are MUCH slower than for standard size SD cards regardless of class or type.

MUCH slower. So if you had a 16gb SDHC rear sized and microSD card, the regular card would be several times faster. That means you will have to WAIT LONGER between pictures with the smaller card than you would with the regular size card.
