Nikon lens - Teleconverter ?

I have a Nikon 28-300mm VR Lens (3.5-5.6)
Admittedly in my 40+ years at this game, I have very little experience with TC's. What little experience I do have is from the late 70's.

My question is: Will a converter be worth looking into for this lens, and if so, which one. (ie; 1x or 2x) Will be using on a D750.

I understand the loss of f/stops, light loss etc.
Thanks to all in advance. "THANK YOU"!! Thanks, Boone.

First of all I would not advise using a TC of any kind on that lens. That is a nice lens that would turn not very good with a TC. Second the Nikon TC's will not fit on it. The only TC's that would work are the third party ones like Kenko.

That was my opinion as well for all these years, but I have read about, and watched a video on "B&H" where a very well know wildlife photographer used a TC on a very expensive lens. I wish I could remember his name? He was an older guy, and shot for Major networks. He had many shots of big names such as; Mohamed Ali, Arnold Palmer, & Elvis Presley to mention a few. He did this from the 60's - 90's. I think he is now retired and just shooting freelance, and public speaking.

I really don't need a TC, it's just that I'm curious. After all these years, I still love to experiment.

Thanks for your thoughts! Much appreciated as well. Thanks, Boone.

This question has been addressed here many times. It is NOT a good idea to use a TC with a variable aperture lens. The rear element extends out the back of the lens and will contact the front element of the TC causing catastrophic failure(crack, break or damage) to the elements. TC's are best used with fixed aperture lenses or primes.

The best answer here is "no." Aside from what you already know about loss of autofocus and light, the lens "may" have a mechanical interference with a TC, and it lacks the image quality to make it usable with a TC. It's weakest performance is at the long end, and if you magnify the softness, it will only be even softer.

TCs are intended for fast primes and a couple of zooms - (70-200 and 200-400).

The 28 - 300 is a great lens but is not one that I would consider using a TC on. I do use a Kenko 1.4 TC on my 70 - 300 Nikor and 150 - 500 Sigma with no problems.

You would have to check with the specs on the lens and to see if any tc will work with it..

I seldom use my TC and it's a good one. I really could have lived easily without it and it is the only thing I own thatI would sell. If you want more reach I would suggest either the Tamron or Sigma 150-600. Just my experienced opinion. Good luck.

I have to agree with David about wanting extra reach. You can pick up a Sigma 150-500 quite reasonably now with the 600's available out there. There have been a few in the Buy/Sell section here. Good Deals for about $700.
Plus, it's a nice lens. I sold mine earlier to get a 150-600. Here you go.

Correction: I meant to say "That I would like to have this lens". I do not have it as of yet, but I do have it on my list.
Thanks, Boone.
