I have both the 5d3 an idx and use case 3 for BIF but i change the tracking sensitivity to -2 Accel/decel to +1 AF pt auto switching to 1 which only works when you use other than single point Al servo1st image priority to release second image priority to 0 equal priority. I have found this works best for me an I shoot a lot of birds on the move daily. You did not say what camera you use but the tracking sensitivity is very important if you have that in your camera,i know the 7d has it. Good luck

When shooting any kind of action you are moving the camera the VC should be turned off since it is counter acting what you are trying to do. You use VC on when shooting still subject photos...Rich
Thank you Rich - finally I got an answer the was straight to the point. I appreciate it!

The overwhelming concensus is that IS/VC should never be ON - unless- you are shooting a stationary subject with shutter speeds longer the 1/125. None of my long lenses have IS either ....
Hello imagemeister - I appreciate your answer - very straightforward and to the point. Interestingly enough, I use my Canon 300mm f4.0 L with the IS on and really haven't missed a BIF panned shot. Today I turned it off on the Tamron and things are very much improving.

OK, I shot a soccer game yesterday. Much better results with the VC OFF. Many more keepers, including some continuous strings that held tack sharp through the series of 12 shots.
The gimbal head and tripod probably helped a lot as well.
But that is the first time I turned off the VC and left it off.
Now, if I could get better with the focus system and not have blades of grass, or distant bushes in sharp focus..... :hunf:
But making progress... Learning.
(Not ready to Super Glue the VC switch.... yet.)

I have the same problem with my autofocus.
I have my eye on a Nest tripod and gimbal head on Ebay right now ;)

I use single point mostly, and try to keep it right on target.
But mysteriously the shot is blurred and either some obscure grass in the foreground, or bushes out yonder, turn out to be the focal point. :?
Frustrating.
Good luck at the auction.
I spent quite a bit of time diddling with my tripods leveling. But we got there right as the game started. So I was rushing.
Then I seemed to be a ball magnet as well. :-o
But that Nest Gimbal is very nice to use.
