am looking for a prime lens. the 35mm 2.4 or the 50 1.8 cost is the same. shoot luncheon speakers and attendees at events would also use for general purpose use have 18-55 pentax and a 70-300 sigma. when using the 18/55 at events I am usually in the 35-50 range more towards 50 end

thanks

That depends on the image area of your camera, full or smaller. Which camera are you using.

IMHO, having a normal "walking around" prime lens is important so that would be the 35mm for the APS-C size sensor.

The 50 f1.8 will be faster, but a little longer, good for events like weddings etc where you are a little further back. Faster is always good. It sounds to me like the 50 f1.8 is just the thing for what you describe. You may have to use your feet more but the advantages of f1.8 are well worth it.

APS-C (1.5x Crop Factor) 35mm will equal 50mm lens.

I use a 50mm f1.8 on my aps and love it because of the speed. 50mm equals about 75mm.

Well, for that kind of work you'd probably like something belt fed.
Running out with a magazine is just so annoying, especially when they are panicking and running for the exits.
And for general purpose you can have a full can to feed the beast.

For your Pentax camera, with the crop factor I would go for the 50mm f1.8 lens, ideal for luncheon speakers.

I have the 35mm 1.8, 50mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.8 primes from Nikon. Based on your use the 35 mm would fit best in my opinion.

I have a 50mm 1.4 Nikon. Why do I always read about the use of the 1.8. For indoor use such as gatherings or weddings, why would you go with the 1.8

Since you tend to shoot at the 50mm end with your zoom I think the 50 f/1.8 would be the most logical choice. Also, I am sure there are times when the additional stop (f/1.8 vs f/2.4) will be of value to you.
