What is the best way to check the focus/ sharpness on a lens?
I have a Nikon D700 the lens is 28-300. I'm not sure if it's the lens or my aging eyes.

f 6.3 300mm looks good to me. There are a lot of test patterns to use for checking your lens. Saw one where UHH'er used a yard stick at 45deg angle and that tech. has been used for years as a test . See OddJobber post on http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-259448-1.html

There are a number of focus correcting websites & devices. I'm using http://regex.info/blog/photo-tech/focus-chart. It's been mentioned a couple of times here on the Hog. And it's free.

an old trick from film days was to tack a newspaper to the wall, photograph a print section, and wait until the photos were developed. by time they were developed you usually didn't care anymore. but the newspaper on the wall is still a fairly good test.
