Someone(s) pls. recommend (AF-S) a lens for my Nikon D5100. It's primarily going to be for (all indoor use) Basketball, Wrestling, Volleyball, etc. I'm somewhat confused on the type to get. I've been told 50mm prime, to a (Zoom) Telephoto. Also, i would like to use it for other things.
Whatever lens you decide on, just make sure that it has an aperture of at least f2.8, so you have enough light and can stop the action of the sports.
f/1.8 was what i was told on the 50mm
Thats good for the 50mm, but you won't find a F1.8 zoom. Look for an F2.8, and they get pricey, but you will still need to shoot at 800 or 1600 ISO most of the time.
Nikons are available, as are Sigmas with the HSM motor system.
Nikon F1.8 in 50mm are hard to come buy currently. Almost everone has them 3 months back ordered. I bought one yesterday that looks brand new with Hoya UV filter on it for $200.00.

A 50mm may be too short. I use the Nikon AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII and love it. The Nikon AF-S 105mm f/2.8 VR macro is also another great lens if you can get closer. These were my go to lens for making photos of my daughter playing lacarosse and for beauty walks.
For sports you will do best will a zoom. The 50 mm 1.4g is my favorite lens but it's more for portraiture. When I do sports events I use my 18-55 zoom and want a better one. I would say go to a 200 mm zoom.

I think Jerry is on the money here. A prime will severely limit your range and youll wind up with a couple hundred shots all very similar. The AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8 VR I believe will give you a lot of room to vary your shots. Im sure that for sports especially indoors youll be happy with that lens. JMHO of course.
I was given a D5100 from my wife for a back up from Ritz camera in Livonia Michigan. My wife was told the kit lens would work with my other D200/300 cameras, as well as all my existing lens would work with the D5100, not true... Yes the kit lens fit but no auto focus in my D200/300 cameras because those cameras have auto focus motors in the camera NOT in the lens. And my existing lens will not work with the D5100 because they require a camera with a focus motor. My wife did not know the details and was trying to surprise me. She is still waiting for her $500.00 return from Ritz Camera after returning the camera three days before Christmas. So much for their 14 days return policy. MY POINT..so not to get a bunch of complaining about being in the wrong forum, Make sure what ever lens you get will "completely" work with your D5100.
