I have a Nikon D90 with 18-105 and 70-300 Nikon lenses. I plan to upgrade to a Nikon D7100, but wonder about waiting for the 7200. Also, what about the 18-300 as a "walking around" lens?

Personally I would think very seriously about waiting for the D7200 to come out ... and then buy the D7100.

Welcome to UHH. The D7100 is one of the finest DX cameras Nikon has ever produced. If you wait for a D7200, you can be sure a D7300 will be soon talked about. I like the 18-200 F/3.5 as a walking around lens. Good luck.

Good point. Then again, I waited and waited for the D7100 and finally pulled the trigger on the D7000 (then the best DX on the market) I received my D7000 two days before the D7100 was announced. Go figure.

THERE IS NO 7200 OR A confirmed RUMOR THAT IT WILL EVER HAPPEN or What the features will be.
Buy the 7100 ( ! ) and enjoy it.

As for the lens, I have constantly read and seen that as the more the zoom factor (e.g., 18-300mm = almost 17X zoom) increases, there are (of necessity) more compromises made in the construction of the lens.

More practically, I would highly recommend the Nikon 18-200mm 1:35-5.6 G ED DX (11.1X zoom). Much sharper.

OJ is pretty much spot on. Nikon rumors is nowwhiwing some info--hesitate to call it data--out of Japan about the potential 7200/9300. but he'snly saying it has a 25% probability of being true

OJ is pretty much spot on. NikonRumors.com is now showing some info--hesitate to call it data--out of Japan about a potential 7200/9300. But he's only giving it a 25% probability of being true and no release date. If you can wait, you'll gat a deal on a 7100 at some point. Personally, I'm not sure the substantive advantage of upgrading from the 7000 to the 7100, but ......

I've had both the 18-200 and 18-300. If you can live without the "extra" 100mm, I'd go for the 18-200. But both are nice lenses.

Why not get the D610 which is on sale for About $1700 or so? It will mean that you may also want to get a series of DX lenses down the line to go with that format. Or you can use your same lenses on the new camera and keep the older one for backup. Either way you can't lose. The D650 is slightly bigger and heavier than your older camera, but not by much. As for waiting for the 7200 - there will always be another better camera. So when you are truly ready spring for it. Another comment you can also just keep your D90 and shoot the hell out of it until you get ready to try something new. Then you will truly enjoy ANY NEW CAMERA!
Good Luck

I have a D7100 and can't imagine asking for more. My walkaround lens is a Sigma 18-250. Works very well.

I recently visited Oahu with exactly that combination and got some really nice shots. Not the best shots but at least an example.

I've had the Nikon D7000 since it first came out. Love it. In a workshop at Glacier National Park with a bunch of guys who had D800's and D810's this summer, they all were amazed at the quality of my images. The D7100 is even much better. A great DX camera! As to lens, I bought the Nikon VR 18-200mm when I got the D7000 and it is the best all around lens I've ever had. Used only it for 6 weeks in Europe. All the Newest Release section of my website at www.GingerichPhotoArt.com was shot with that lens. Check it out.

Welcome to our forum!

Why wait? If the D7200 seems like a good deal when it's introduced, either sell the D7100 or buy the D7200 so you'll have two bodies.

I have a Nikon D7100, having this past year upgraded from a D5100. The 7100 is loaded with lots of features and offers plenty of creative options. I also have the 18-300 lens, older and heavier version. It is a wonderful carry-about lens. I took it on a trip to Germany and shot lots of pictures. Two of these have won awards in local photo contests, so the lens is plenty sharp. With the price of the 7100 recently coming down to below $1000, I would buy it and then choose my lens. There are plenty of choices, but I like my 18-300 for an all-purpose lens

I have the D7100 and also think that you should go for it. The 18 - 200 is a good walk about and is the lens that I use. It is not that sharp at 200 or 135 and has some lens distortion at 18, but this is workable.

What I like about the D7100 is that it does have a AF motor in the body. This means that you can use older AF and D lens' and auto focus, the Nikon D3x00 and D5x00 bodies do not have the AF motor in the body. I picked up a grey market 50 1.8 D for $109 at B&H and my D7100 will auto focus it. It is a great portrait lens. I also picked up the Nikkor 35 f/1.8G AF-S DX , $195, for this and it is incredibly sharp, recommended also. The 35 MM works out to be the equivalent to a 50 mm on a FF camera and is a good street lens.

D7100 is highly recommended. I used the 18-200 for a couple of years and replaced it with the 18-300 for the added reach. I'll sell the 18-200. Either lens is a 'do everything' with the D7100.
