I have been shooting film for most of my life...but ready to try DSLR...I have 4 p&s cameras...but looking for an entry level DSLR...looking for manual settings ...same as my AE1
Excuse me for boring you to death...but everytime I look online...I hug my old canon.
And keep in mind I have to trick my charming wife into buying this for my birthday...so price is a factor...
Thanks for your patience
You cannot go wrong with one of the Canon Rebel models.... Very good cameras...

Hi ggttc: You say price is a factor, What price range are you working with? Like donrent said the Canon Rebel is a good entry level Camera. You might also consider a used or refirbished DSLR camera. More bang for your buck, lots of options. Some UHH members have equipment for sale, then there is places like B&H, Adorama, KEH, Amazon, Craigs List and a bunch more That have slippen my mind for the moment. Good luck in charming the wife into getting this for you for your brithday. ;-)
I have a Canon T2i and love it. Also shoots great video. I too am a life long Canon fan, my first slr was a Canon EX Auto back in the mid 70's when I was a teenager.
A budget would really help.
I agree with the Canon Rebel cameras. I have two of them and I really enjoy these cameras. I have the XS, which is still available but it's an older model now and I have the t1i.
The t1i does HD video also and does a pretty nice job of it for the kind of work I do these days - virtually all volunteer for my church and Relay for Life.
In my opinion you just can't go wrong with Canon.
The Nikon d5100 is a great camera

Years ago I shot with Cannon but presently use Nikon. Nikon, Cannon, and Sony are all fine choices. Do some research to see what fits your needs. Somebody once said pick up every camera you are considering purchasing and whichever feels the best in your hands is the correct choice, as you will be spending a great deal of time holding it.
T3i should be in your price range.
You may also want to consider the canon loyalty program, if you have or have access to a broken canon.
A good Semi-Pro is one I bought 2 years ago by Nikon. It's a 300s DX so cropped sensor, and does excellent with manual settings but can go auto on some or all factors - your choice. a bit spend y maybe but the kit lenses aren't half bad.
I recently bought the Canon 60D and am loving it. Everyone in our Birding Club comments on how clear and sharp all my pictures are.
Love my 7D. Don't go any where without it!
I was in your shoes a while back and I got the Nikon D5100. I have taken >2400 picts now and love it!
