An interview with RJM,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I've been taking photo's since I bought an SLR when I was about 17 and then had small film cameras. I then got a cheap digital when they came. It's only the last 3 years that I've taken it seriously. Up until then I didn't even know you could correct exposures, etc!

2) Do you have any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I completed a Digital Photography Course at a local college in 2013 to get an ONC Certificate. I have been on a few photo shoots with Olympus cameras and early this year won a shoot with street fashion photographer Alex Lambrechts sponsored by Fuji Cameras.
I do all sorts of photography including sports. I like experimenting with digital art and making the photo a bit different.

3) In your opinion, what makes a good picture stand out from the rest?
A photo that makes the viewer want to look for more than a few seconds. It makes the viewer think. I think this is firstly the subject matter, followed by composition. This is helped by good lighting and processing.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup? Can you walk us through it?
I used The amazing Sony A7s and 16-50 kit lens off the Sony A6000. I was driving past the manor house (which I have permission to shoot) and could see the moon was overhead. I drove in and it was pitch black so I was working the camera in the dark. I took about a dozen different exposures as I could hardly see the image in the viewfinder and wanted to catch the moon before the clouds covered it, which put a stop to my shooting. If it hadn't been rushed I'd have used a tripod and taken a torch - but was on my way to shoot something else!

5) Do you post process your final images, and if so can you describe your workflow?
I always use Picasa to download and do the basic edits. From there I use a few processing programs depending on what I want to do. These include OnOne Perfect Photo Suite 9 (will do RAW), Cyberdirector 6 (will do RAW), NIK Effex. I also enjoy using Smart Photo Editor. I have PSE and LR but don't use them a great deal as I find the above programs more intuitive to use and they suit me.
With The Haunted House image, I didn't do much to it except put it the fog effect using SPE (above) to give it that eerie effect. The rest was as shot!

6) Who or what has influenced your photography and what inspired you to take your winning shot?
No particular person has influenced me, but I do enjoy Steve Huff photo.com. It was Halloween and I was looking for something spooky to take and just happened to be passing the Old Manor House....and popped in. I was lucky the moon was above it and that the one window only was lit!

7) Would you change anything if you could do it again, and if so what?
If I knew I was going to be shooting in such darkness I'd have taken a tripod but the amazing sensor in the A7s helped me get a half decent image to play with.

8) What is the one thing you wish you knew when you started taking photos?
That it's not the camera but the subject, composition and your spin on the pic, often helped by processing.

9) What is your favorite photography accessory, other than your camera?
My Lowepro Slimline 150 camera bags, and handmade 40' leather straps for each camera. I know, that's two!

10) If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?
The Olympus 12-50 kit lens. It's light, versatile and will do most jobs (even has a dedicated macro switch) and EZ function for video- and can be picked up so cheap. I have the 12-40 Pro and dedicated primes but I kept this from the Oly EM5 as I liked it so much. A great decision!

11) What lighting equipment, if any, do you take on a shoot?
I have a flash unit and studio lights but rarely use them. Camera Sensors are so good these days, and with built it flashes, that it's basically the mainstay of professional shooters.

12) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I enjoy walking and was a big metal detecting enthusiast, but photography has taken over. I'm lucky that I don't need to make money so just shoot purely for my pleasure.

13) Do you have any funny or interesting stories about your experiences?
Well, I moved from the Panasonic FZ150 to the Olympus EM5, my first interchangeable lens camera. I charged the battery, SD card in, strap on and went off in the car to try it out. On arrival at Newport Transporter bridge I grabbed it off the back seat and slung it over my shoulder. I hadn't done the strap up properly and it flew up in the air and landed on the road. Luckily it still worked albeit there was a slight chip out of the corner. Since then I have leather camera straps custom made with ball-bearing 360 degree links, by Footprints. It won't happen again!

14) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
Yes, I post to Facebook RJM imaging and do a daily blog on www.blipfoto.com with my user name 'BobsBlips'. It's a fun site and you get to see what others are doing on a daily basis - and how good photos can be just using a phone. It shows you that fancy cameras aren't needed!

15) Do you have any advice for the rest of us?
Yes, it's the best camera is the one you have with you. If I had to keep one it'd be the Sony RX100 as it really does fit in a pocket and is so capable. I like trying cameras (I can afford to chop and change) but I do know that my RX100 is all I need along with the processing programs I mentioned. Most people looking at photo's haven't a clue what camera or lens was used (and don't care) - they either like the photo or they don't....and that's down to the subject and composition. Don't talk photography - go and shoot it!
