This is a shot from my front street; the smelter is Cominco, the worlds largest lead zinc smelter. Been here 120+ years, not like this though. Growing up I can remember hardly any trees on the mtns because of the sulfur they sent up the stacks (acid rain). They found out they could make fertilizer out of it and Elephant Brand fertilizer was born- its exported globally. In the last 20 years Cominco (now owned by Tech) they have been very dedicated to cleaning up their act- pollution wish. Very little goes into the air anymore and NOTHING goes in the river..
If you look half way up on the left side (steam plumb) is where the fertilizer plants are, this is also where the heavy water for the atomic bombs dropped during the 2nd world war was produced, the towers have since been demolished. Lots of history around here and I am proud to call it home!
