I have just purchased the new Canon 7D Mkii. I have had two sessions with it and I am thrilled with the performance. AF is so fast.
Adobe has not caught up with the release of this new model and I cannot download the CR2 files using Lightroom or any of their other programs and have had to use the Canon software. It is no match for Lightroom and i am wondering if there is another program I can use that will download the CR2 but work more like Lightroom?
After I process in the canon software I then convert to a Tiff file to transfer to Photoshop. This is really clunky.
Does anyone have any other thoughts of improving on this.
Thanks for your help. Cheers. Brian

Been using LR4 for a couple years now and have never had a problem loading CR2 or the AW? raw files from my G15 Canon or ex-A57 Sony from the SD card directly into LR. On IMPORT, LR automatically puts all the raw files in my Picture folder/ 2014/date. Running Win 8.1 for computer here.
Wonder just what the change is?
surely CR2 files are CR2 files - camera model should not matter?
I used irfvanview and it opened the files ok it does bulk processing to batch process them into tiff files

Unfortunately, new cameras often come with new raw file formats. Nikon uses the term "NEF," but new Nikon models have to wait for Adobe to catch up and issue an update for processing NEF files.

They surely are CR2 files as that is what canon uses as a file extension to denote their raw files, however the CR2 files are different for individual cameras which is why you have to wait for adobe to catch up, same for Nikon cameras.
The raw file is not going to be the same for an 8mp Rebel camera and Canon's latest crop frame of full frame camera.
I am sure Adobe will have it out in short order

Not being a Nikanon user I was unaware of this problem - that I think should not exist. I haven't come across this with Panasonic RW2 files - from G1 up to G5 cameras. (although I admit to not being one of the first to the counter except for the G1). Are there incompatibility issues? for example where you have two or three Canons (or Nikons)?
Jpg is Jpg is Jpg - so why isn't CR2 is CR2 is CR2. Is it not time for Raw is Raw is Raw - across the board like Jpgs? Don't forget that we don't all idolatise Adobe. In any case - is it not a Canon problem rather than an Adobe problem? I hope that your livelihood doesn't depend on those files being converted and on to the presses this weekend!

The problem exists for a few months after every new model is released by most brands. All the manufactures make minor adjustments to their RAW data file formats as they bring out a new camera. Call it a photographic data "recipe" if it helps make more sense.
For reasons unknown, Nikon, Canon, Sony, Panasonic, Olympus, etc do not give away advance copies of their RAW recipes. Adobe, and others, can't do anything until after the cameras are released. The best they can do is update their "Adobe Camera Raw" recipe book several times a year, or about every 3 months. I'm not sure, but I think they have to "reverse engineer" it. In other words, they need to buy the camera or get RAW files from one, to figure it out.
Adobe, clear back in 2006, offered a solution by providing a public domain specification for RAW they call "Digital Negative" or "DNG". Some Leica, Casio, Samsung and others use this in some of their models. So the "problem" doesn't exist.
Some joke about this as being the "Adobe Tax" on anyone that is compelled to be pioneer buyers of the latest camera models based on the excitement of press releases and early reviews.

Had this same issue when I got my D700 -- ended up having to go with APERTURE, and lost a bunch of photos. Aperture has changed down through the years, but I am still using it. JMHO

Thanks for the explanation. :-)
So do we need updates to LR and CC 2014, and are they available? I haven't received my 7DII yet.
