I believe there was a paper published in the Lancet on this subject, which lends a lot of credence.

I was once pronounced clinical dead after an accident many, many years ago, according to records I stayed that way for almost 40 min. before showing signs of life (pulse) again. But that doesn't count as an experience, because I can't remember a thing, cause I was out. But I'm curious what others have to say.

My girlfriend asked me if the dress she was wearing made her look fat. I hesitated for a moment. That's the closest I've come to an NDE.

Look up the medical definition of Clinical Death. Someone was pulling your leg (or you're pulling ours) when you state you were clinically dead for 40 minutes. 40 seconds is possible but definitely not 40 minutes.

The paper you are referring to probably is:

http://profezie3m.altervista.org/archivio/TheLancet_NDE.htm

I have no doubt that such experiences occur, but there is nothing metaphysical about them; just the brain circuitry malfunctioning until normal physiological status is fully restored.

As I haven't tried this, I don't know.
:D I think it wise to keep an open mind.

Indeed, that was a CLOSE call. There are times when discretion is the better part of valor!

All of you are having near death experiences. Every day you are a little bit nearer.

Dr Eben Alexander has written a couple of books on the subject as he has had NDE. He is American and a Neurosurgeon who didn't believe the theory until it happened to him.

As a registered Respiratory Therapist I have attended and assisted on many "Code Blues" aka Cardiac Arrests. 1 in particular come to mind. I went to a code and as usual, it was organized orchestrated chaos. There is a lot of activity that circles around a code in the small intensive care room. Anyway, this was a rather long CPR event but when it was over, the lady was successfully resuscitated. Now, the interesting part. She was fully able to describe the event. She said she floated up to the ceiling and watched what went on. She knew the number of people that was in the room, and recanted things that were said and done. In my opinion, this patient was clinically dead but was still able to hear. However this doesn't explain what she says she saw happening. Her view from the ceiling would have been totally different from what she would have been able to see lying flat on her back in the bed. A second incident occurred while I was working a Coronary Care Unit. A man went into arrest for a short time. After a short and successful resuscitation, he recalled the event like this. " I remember feeling kind of funny and I happened to look at the heart monitor and saw it go flat! I thought hey I just died! The next thing I remember was waking up."

It supposedly has something to do with reduced oxygen in the brain and the resultant visual effects one "sees." What we need is for someone to be dead for a few hours and then brought back. Then we'll really know what goes on. No, I'm not volunteering.
