Just outside taking a close-up of this new flower in our garden and noticed this insect...is it a baby grasshopper or something to spray before it eats my plant...?

This is a true bug, which means it has a proboscis for sucking plant juices. Considered a pest.
I almost recognize the flower.

Bloom looks like an African Iris. Bug looks like a katydid but not sure, Ron. You might just want to pick it off and send it to katydid heaven. LOL

Both photos are so pretty! I know that's not why you posted them, but I'm just saying :)

Katydids have chewing mouth parts. True bugs have a piercing proboscis, as seen in the second photo.

Move it to the neighbor's garden. Bugs are people too.

I'm not partial to your bug, Ron, but the photos are great.

Douglass nailed it, as usual. You can see the black tip of the proboscis I think between the 2nd and 3rd pairs of legs. The 2 light veins on the membranous part of the wings indicates it is a leaf bug, family Miridae, which do indeed suck plant juices, but only a few of these are pests, not this one. Most are inconsequential to our worldly needs, and can just be left alone without any tangible damage.
The clarity of your pic on enlargement is amazing!

Yeh, I won't really squish it, I'd probably never find it again anyway...
