Nest Gimbal Head

Oh Wow!! After my brief experience with the Opteka gimbal head, this Nest unit is like a breath of fresh air!! There's absolutely no comparison in quality and functionality between the two.

Thank you, MT Shooter, for the quick and accurate service. I want also to thank you for taking time to explain the differences I could expect in the Nest unit. I am most satisfied.

On top of all that, the Nest even came with a great little carrying bag!! I'm most impressed. I've been sitting here playing with my mounted camera/lens and it's really hard for me to get this smile off my face. :-)

Thank you again, MT!!

Take a photograph of that big smile and post it! The bag is very useful in other capacities. The folks @ Nest know how to compliment their products. You should see the tent they ship with the tripod.

That is a fascinating piece of equipment Bruce, please keep us posted on your adventure with it. Looks like the answer to a lot of different problems!

Phil

If you have a second camera, smartphone or something that shoots JPEGs, would you post some pictures of your set up? If you can, please include something like a dollar bill in a shot so I can get a feel for relative size? I'm interested in a NEST, but have a M43 system that may be too small and too light weight to work well.

Your M4/3 system may indeed be too small to use with a gimbal set-up. Gimbal heads are designed to mount a long lens that has a tripod collar on it, they are NOT intended, nor do they work for, mounting a camera body to them. Unless you are using something like the Olympus 300mm F2.8 beast, then I would not recommend the Nest, nor any other gimbal for your system. The M4/3's is a great lightweight system, and that's its big advantage, light weight. Gimbal heads are designed for heavy weights and they are fantastic at handling them. A 12 pound lens and a 2 1/2 pound camera can easily be handled with one finger when properly balance on a good gimbal setup, and smooth operation is guaranteed on a quality gimbal under almost any conditions.

Thank you for the advice. I think you said the same thing in a different way elsewhere and I appreciate it. I also thank you for the advice you gave me a year ago about getting a Nikon and big Sigma. I ended up not following it even though I think it's clear the best wildlife shots come for larger formats. However, price and portability intrigued me enough that I took the risk and went a different direction.

FWIW in the wildlife photography business, Art Wolf and Thomas Mangelsen are teaming up to lead a trip to the Galapagos. Price is about $12K per person. The gear people bring might be more interesting than the wildlife itself!
