Interesting article. I constantly wrestle with these parameters: critical focus vs max DOF

Nice read! Do you play much with stacking. I have some software to try it but haven't had time. Maybe this spring.

Great article! It gives you something to practice and try. Now if I could get the subjects to hold still long enough to achieve what's needed for focus stacking.

Focus-stacked insects are usually dead. Many stack-photographers refrigerate them to death, then arrange them in life-like poses.

I often wondered how they could get such sharp images. Another photography secret revealed. Doesn't help much when you're rummaging around for a mid-night snack. LOL

Which software do you have for focus stacking?

I have Helicon Focus but I hear that Zerene Stacker is better. I have not checked the price yet. I am just starting to play with it. My focus rail just came for Christmas :-D , but work has kept me to busy to play. I tried to do it with the focus on the lens, but had gaps it the focus.

I wish I lived closer to you. I would love to play with a calibrated focus rail.

Price wasn't to bad. I got a Manfrotto 454. It is about as cheap as you can go and still have quality. Can remember the price, but I think around $75.

I prefer Helicon, but maybe I should give Zerene another look-- just trial at this point.

I have not played with Zerene yet. So I don't know much about it. Just my friends seem to like it better. They are getting some great pictures out of it.
