I shot my first wedding this past weekend on Halloween. It was a costume affair and I had a really good time doing it. However, it may be my last wedding!! I'm sure other wedding photographers have had this happen - you get everyone lined up and set up for a pic when some ignorant slob with his trusty cell phone cuts in front of you and says -"just let me grab a shot of this". It happened more than once and from different people. Why are people with cell phones so ignorant and inconsiderate? Cell phones should not be allowed at weddings - get a real camera - even a point & shoot!! One more than one occasion I had people with their cell phone jump out in front of me to get the pic I had set up!! It was quite frustrating to say the least. A few times I told people "you can have the same shot after i take mine first but that didn't help very often. Just venting fellow hoggers - just venting!!

Yep it happens, no matter what you do and it happens more and more. I warn my brides, grooms and families that it this happens, they get the shot with "uncle jo" jumping in front and ruining the shot. I remind them at reshersal, and show everyone there an example, and ask for their help in trying to stop it from happening. The day of the wedding, I have someone make an announce prior to the wedding starting at the service. This does seem to help.

As I said if the don't just sit down and anounce that you will not take your pictures unless they stop. I have never done this but I have had to have a few words with whoever was paying for the pictures that I would still get paid if I took no more pictures unless they stopped. It works. - Dave

Yes Brian, people are rude and ignorant and will bad mouth how rude you are to all and sundry if you pull them into place.
This is basically why most of us refuse to do weddings.
Cellphones are not the problem, it is the people jumping in front of you with any sort of camera, cellphone, tablet, point and shoot, bridge, entry level DSLR, pro DSLR, they are all the same.
If you search this site for wedding photography you will find many similar stories.

A big reason why I don't touch weddings. It is not fun, it would be torture for me. Flowers and mountains don't give me attitude.

Yes, the terms of a contract! If not, it is on them (the wedding party).

I don't do weddings but I have some understanding of contract law.

I think he meant all of us collectively. Is that not the case?

Earlier in my wedding career, like the first 30 weddings, I had the same problem with "line jumpers" getting in my way. No amount of pleading or written agreements worked until one day it hit me. I simply told the B&G that it's their wedding day and I know you want to party and have fun, so if you could help me out and ask everyone not to shoot any pictures until I'm totally done and then I will set up some shots for the guests. So I would have them say that line at every wedding and over 800 weddings later(lost count) it was still working and barely ever had a line jumper bother me again. They WILL OBEY the B&G! Good luck!

Many years ago I shot a lot of my weddings where a few other weddings were also being photographed and I had become friends with some of the other photographers. What we did to stop uncles and friends (this was long before cel phones) getting reasonably good shots was to have one of the other photographers sit off to the side during the group pix with a slave on his flash aimed right at the current offender. It didn't stop them, as they were unaware of what was going on, but they were not able to show very good shots of the groups.

Want to know my favorite trick? I get a shot of them standing in front of me with their cell phone. Huge shadow from their head may show up on someone else's photo. Then I get a shot of their face (with the flash on) and just say "thanks" then go back to shooting. After blinding a few people, all but the drunk ones usually get the hint. One woman asked me why I took her photo and I told her it was for a website about people who upstage professionals with their cell phones. The groom was smiling about it, so she must have been from the bride's side.

I always let the bride and groom know that I will do this to discourage bad behavior from the guests.

I've been a wedding photographer for 40+ years/3000 weddings. In today's world it's very hard to control camera phones, etc. My contract states that I am the only photographer. I tell my customer that I am not a policeman nor would I make their guests unconfortable at the wedding by making them not take theri pictures. If they choose not to make it clear that I am "the" photographer for posed shots, I will take the picture and let their guests take their unauthorized pictures also. I will then not show these pictures to them after the wedding, which will prevent these important pictures fron being included in portraits, albums, etc. If they do want mine, they will be available for purchase at portrait prices - for on line viewing only. This has really worked for me & trust me, the B&G are not bashful telling their guests " no pictures when the photographer is taking his".

Look around, this is a very inconsiderate generation so I'm not surprised at all. Time was when respect for others was the order of the day... that day is long gone.

Sorry for your problems.
