Lightroom files messed up!

Hi,
I went looking for some pics in a file, found the pics and imported to LR. Since then I fixed the date and time in my camera. I had my files all neatly set in LR 4 , according to date and place. I never went outside of LR to look for the files but somehow they got all jumbled up. For eg. Some files for Oct 2014 show up on the very top, with files for other months in between and then show up for Oct 2014 again. I would like to have these files in consecutive order. I looked at sort but didn't know what to set there. Can these files be dragged to spaces in between files so I can set them according to date?
Thanks.

What is it about Lr that so many people have issues with its file handling, the very feature it is supposed to excel at and be made for? I mostly use Ps CS6, it never surprises me as to files (It does have other issues from time to time, like Warp crashing my system). I have been slowly learning Lr but I have to wonder why?

All file "handling" must be done in LR. after importing. Then - no problems. LR is a great data base manager, but it will not find files that have been moved or name-changed outside of LR unless you right click on files/folders and find them for LR. Then, if you sort or filter by date taken in metadata, you can find and organize by date taken.

The answer to your question is that LR is a very powerful piece of software, capable of many wonderful processes. It is not an application you install and "just start using". One MUST learn how to make the software work and what it does in all those processes.

The best way, in my opinion, to learn it is to get a copy of Adobe Lightroom Classroom in a Book. The book will teach every single thing that LR is capable of and how/when to use it. Once we've gone through that book, the frustrations dissipate.

Exactly and well said!

I'm apparently slow to learn using books. I learn photo software a lot faster when I see it work. Personal favorites are J. Kost at Adobe TV and Jan Kabili at lynda.com

Ironically, that is exactly the book I have on the table next to me now. I know about having to move things from with-in Lr. I was wondering why so many other people have that and other problems with Lr.

I was somewhat commenting on Tigerpaws' question by rhetorically asking my question. I know about that issue with Lr from learning the hard way. But Tigerpaws problem may be something else and I keep seeing many questions about Lr.

No one seems to ask questions about Photoshop on the UHH which is supposed to be an infinitely harder program to master. I'm more skilled at CS6 at this point myself. But studying Lr to see why so many other people do like it. So unnatural for me as a long time Windows (since 1994) and File Manager / Explorer user. I have to restrain myself with Lr and do everything from it. Lr is probably easier for a Mac user to learn.

Funny. The ONLY time I've had difficulty with LR finding stuff was when I tried to move files using LR. Then I neither I nor LR could find them!!!!! I have found it's easier to go ahead and move the files, then when LR can't find them, tell it where the new location is. Works for me and a LOT less time-consuming and confusing. You LR experts will have a cow about that, but it works for me.

Check your view" setting. While in "Library" mode go to "VIEW" at the top, select "Sort". You can set it to display by name, date, order added, etc. That may be the problem.

The issues generally occur when people do anything to an image file outside of Lightroom, after its been imported. This includes renaming it, moving it, deleting it, etc. When that occurs the result will almost always be some type of conflict. On top of that the catalog, while generally very stable, can sometimes become corrupted. That's why its important to automatically backup the catalog each time you exit an editing session in Lightroom.

Personally I think it's because they won't let go of the old "manual file sort" paradigm.

In the "old days" you had to move files so you could mentally organize them, and thus be able to find them later.

Now...you just put them all in a bucket, tag them, keyword them, or rate them and LR will find and sort them for you.

I just shot a family portrait session, I dumped all of the images in LR in one folder, then I culled them by "X" or "P" the first time around. (that marks them for deletion in LR.)

Then I rated them as "keeper" or "maybe"

Then filtered them in LR so it would only show the "maybes" and re-culled them again.

What I came out with I filtered by rating, exported to a folder and sent to the printer.

I would have never known they were in the same folder based on how they appear and sort in LR.

I went into Sort. The only thing there that I can think of is to set at "capture time" and '"ascending order". Order added did not do anything. There are 5 files in LR that are from OCt 2014 that are perched right on top when I open Library mode that will not move! My question is how do I drag these files to their right place in Oct 2014? I didn't want to mess it up any further by dragging and putting in another file and then go looking again. Sometimes the internet can be spotty on and off as I live in the country. Could this have made the files skip up? Thanks to all for all your help. Really appreciate it.

On the ones at the top, check the capture time, if it is wrong you can go into "metadata" & change the time. Just check the ones before or after where you want them to go to get the time you need to change to.
